Yes your headlight should start to light up as you crank the engine, if the light is turned on. So what your saying is when you just got a new plug your spark was blue and now its orange? How long ago was this? It is a good idea to replace your plug every now and then. What is it like $4 for a pack of 2?

its an 82 model.i purchased a used motor from ebay. got everthing ready and it cranked an ran fine.next morning cranked it an was warming it up and it died out and will not crank. i also noticed that when i pull the rope the headlight dosent light up.could it be the primary or secondary coil? i need all the help i can get

What you want to do is test the resistance on the connections at the stator plug. You will need a Multi Meter.
