Default idling

Thanks to the help of a few guys on here, I have been able to fix my spark plug fouling issue. My 1986 200s was running too rich, so I went down one size on the main jet to a 97.5. Now it runs better, but I can't get it to idle right.

If I turn the idle screw in, it will idle just fine, but as soon as I give it gas it won't go back to a normal idle and the rpms stay pretty high for 30 seconds or so and then it will finally start going back to normal.

When I tired putting in the #95 jet, it only made the problem worse.

I was thinking of bumping up the pilot jet a size or two. Would that be a good place to start? If not, what direction should I go in?

Thanks,
Dave

The main jet will not effect the idle cause it dosen't come into play till 3/4 throttle. I would check the routing of your cable making sure there are no tight bends or binding between the frame and the gas tank. Check the cable to make sure it's moving freely back and forth in the sheath. To me your problem seems to be in the cable and not the carb. Try flicking the throttle with the bike off do you hear the slide snap back down or not? Just covering all the basics first.

hey thanks for the response. The cable is fine, and the throttle body is in the correct way (not turned around 180). I've done that before and it just revvs to the moon!

Any other ideas?

O.k. just making sure the cable was alright. On a couple of occasions I've had it get caught up around the rubber gromets that the tank slides onto on the frame or had it routed that when I turned the handlebars it pulled it and kept the revs up a little. Check the o ring on the carb's cap on top, check for cracks in the intake boot, maybe put some oil on the o ring on the carb. at the intake boot, check for a nick at the bottom of the slide, all this to check for air leaks. When it is idling correctly spray some carb. cleaner or starting fluid around these areas and see if the idle goes up if so then there's your problem.

so an air leak near or on the carb could cause this?
