Here is the deal on sprockets.
First, you never want to go smaller on the front if you can avoid it. I will only use a smaller front for a quick test. If it works, I make the difference using the stock front (or larger) and a different rear.
The reason why going to a smaller front is bad is because the chain is forced to change velocity at a much higher rate on the smaller sprocket. That is a power robber and a chain killer.
Most people just go with the smaller front because it is a cheap gear change but anyone who knows, will buy the chain and go with the rear.
