350x starting problems

OK ATC guys don't be pissed but I put a new '86 350x engine into my 250x frame. Last week I couln't wait to start it I had it mostly together, I had the header, no silencer, intake all together (of course), nos 350x carb, fresh oil, fresh gas. Well, the problem is that it does not want to be kick started. I have given it a little encouragement by pull starting it, two or three pulls and it started, after I got it started it would kick start on first or second kick when still warm. I have done some more work getting it together, i.e. the exhaust and throttle cable, and have tried just kick starting it but it does not want to start. I have some finishing work to do to it still but was hoping to get some ideas for me to think about before I start getting into it. The electronics are for a 350x, the motor seems to be fresh and had been stored with oil in it. Could it be a jetting problem? valve clearance need adjusting? old rings? I would think these things would keep it from running right but not from starting. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you ridden it much?They say after they sit awhile it needs to be run to get the elect system working right again.Ride it a few days before you worry too much.

Thanks for the responce truck. The electrical system came off a running engine, though I do not know when it was last used. I was figuring on tring to ride it a time or two before I started worring but then I was also thinking, why wouldn't it just start up? dunno!? Any other thoughts out there?

Have you checked your compression? If it's below eighty pounds or so try putting a little oil in the plug hole (about a tablespoon or so). If it goes up quite a bit it's time for a rebuild. It'll starts good warm because the piston swells as it warms up, this will seal the blow-bye. If the oil dosn't help the compression much either it needs a valve job or check the valve lash (it should be about three to five thousanths [.003-.005]). If you have more than 100PSI compression try checking for airleaks by spraying carburator cleaner on all parts of the intake, if the motor speeds up you have a leak. Also try cleaning your carburator, any dirt in it will make it hard to start.I hope this helps. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

Your right on leadfoot, it was the compression. But what it was is the decompression cable needed to be tightened. The compression may be low though because I had to set the cable as tight as possible.
