I have an 85 200x and was wondering if anyone knows what sprocket sizes to buy that would give me better performance? 1st gear is really to low and revs to quick. any help would be appreciated

It's just according to what kind of riding that you do and the kind of performance that you are looking for. The stock 85 200X should have a 12 tooth on the front and a 40 on the back. From the factory they were pretty low geared. If your looking for more top end, go up one tooth on the front (same as dropping 3 teeth on the back). That shouldn't sacrifice much of your low end but will give you a little more on the top. Don't go any bigger than 13 on the front. The chain will get a little close to the case. 13/38 has always been a good combination for me. Don't forget that changing your tire size can change your gearing quite a bit too. Hope this helps.

thanks, very well explained I think that will work perfect, but you said tire size will also determine the gearing, well, I belive the stock tires are 22x11x8, well I have 20x11x8 do you think that will also make a big difference even by changing to a 13/38 ? I dont want to change the spockets and and find out it was a waist because I have 20 inch tires. thanks

The smaller tires will gear it down for sure. That 2 inches in height will make a difference. I'd start with the 13 tooth front sprocket and see how you like it. Cheaper that way too. Then if it's still too low, you can change to a 38 or maybe even a 36. The good thing about the 36 is that if it is geared too high after the swap, you can always put the 12 back on the front to gear it back down a little.
