Default Just got a 200x, it needs work, I need help

I just went and picked up an '83 ATC200x. It's got a few problems and I need some suggestions from you guys on how to fix them. First thing is the rear shock is blown. I already have a guy lined up to rebuild that. There is an oil leak where the shifter comes through the case. Any ideas on how big a job that is to fix? The biggest problem is that it won't start. The guy said his son was riding, tipped it on it's side and then it wouldn't start after that. Sounds like there is more to the story than that, but I work with the guy so I don't want to roast him too bad. He's tried to get it going a couple times since then with no luck. My first thought was that he scrambled the kill switch wires, but he says it still gets spark. I can't verify this since I don't even have it off the truck yet. Any thoughts as to how to start the diagnosis would be appreciated. Some mods that I am aware of are a Supertrapp pipe, race cam, high compression piston, K&N filter. Thanks.

First check spark at the plug. Take the fuel line off the gas tank and make sure gas runs out when you turn the petcock to on. Make sure gas is in the tank. Check the oil. See if the air filter is clean. That should get you started.

Here's an update on the situation. I replaced the pulse generator and I think I am getting good spark now. Now it will run for about five seconds and then quit. If I drain the fuel bowl and kick it it will run for five seconds again and then quit. I took the carb apart and cleaned it as best I could without actually soaking it. What am I missing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yeah I would check the air box and your fuel lines. I know my fuel lines were dry rotted and leaking. I replaced them with some sweet lines and she is dry as a bone, no leaking

I guess I should have mentioned that it has a brand new K&N filter and I replaced the fuel line, too. New spark plug as well.

Mine has a Supertrapp that sounds pretty good. Not overly loud either. You probably aren't going to have a whole lot of choices, I don't think too many companies are still making 200x parts. They pop up on Ebay quite a bit though.

What about the float bowl? Is it sticking? Something with carb i'd say. What about the needle, is it bent? Get a book and see how the carb should look. Most of these books are in library or on the internet. Maybe someone put it together wrong after looking at it. Just leads you can try

Good luck

I just had my 200x in the shop for the same thing. The neddle and seat were bad. So I got a new carb and it works great now. If there is gas going back in to your air box I would bet the farm that is it.

I guess I should have mentioned that the bike is now running and has been for about a month. It needed a new pulse generator and the carb needed to be cleaned out. Runs good now. Valves need adjustment, so I'll get to that this weekend.
