86' 250R problems
#1
i want to buy a three wheeler and i found a 1986 250R which is a great engine but the guy said it wont spark. He said he thinks its the stator not starter, stator. I know about building three wheelers but when it comes to the engine that is my weak part. and i was wondering if fixing them is hard and expensive? Is it worth to buy? he is asking 800 for it and if the part is cheap and easy i bealive i will buy it but i need help thanks
p.s if u think it could be anything else let me know thanks

I had a similar problem with my 200x. I don't know if the electrical system on a 250r is exactly the same, but it is probably similar. My problem turned out to be the pulse generator, which cost me about $45 at the local dealer. Another likely culprit is the coil, which you can take to the dealer to get load tested. (My local dealer charged me $5 to test it) Also, the CDI could be shot. If you have a shop manual and an electrical tester, you can look up the readings in the shop manual that you should get for each electrical connection on the CDI and test it yourself. You can also test the spark plug wire that way. First thing to try is a new spark plug. Just a couple more things to put on the list to check. If it turns out that the stater is bad, it's much cheaper to have it rebuilt than to buy a new one. Chances are it is only one of the above items, and you could fix it for under $100 if you can do it yourself. Good luck.

these are notorious for spark problems.. Its either the coil, cdi, or stator. Either way you can buy a whole new wiring harness for $300 on up, or just get each part tested to see which one is bad. If your not wanting to buy a reliable machine that you never have to work on.. walk away now. Im just talking from past experience. Once in a while youll find a unmolested jewel, but thats like a needle in a haystack.
