Witch is the best for the buck ?

I want a fast quad and I ride mostly on trails, tracks, and dunes less. (all around finally). My budget is around $6500 for now but i'll have half more in summer.
I have a little preferance for 4 strokes for reliability and not having to mix the gas. First I wanted a 250r... A 8k 330r is so maniable and powerfull, but isnt reliable and isnt made for trails.
Then the 450s (yfz and r) ... but I'd have to spend all my budget on buying the quad ! no more for handling and motor parts.
Then the 400s. Good all around machines but is it worth it to put 3-4 k into a 3k 1999 400ex ???? does the z400 and kfx has some potential for handling and hp without putting the bike's price on aft. parts ??
The raptor is a heavyweight tower. The banshee is a beast but handles like sh*t and sucks gas as hell.
Some have recommended me to buy a used 400ex and putt a 11:1 440 in it. How could a oil cooled handle this ???????
Many of you have invested 2k? 3k? 5k?? in your byke... how does it run ??

I would recommend one of the new 450's, why? Because from the manufactured the are race ready, meaning they have good shocks so you could pound them in the track. One of the 400's, well some forum members have written that they have invested plenty of money into their 400, but still isn't good enough. So just go with either the R or the YFZ, they handle good, the motor revs high, so you have quicker acceleration, and with just a slip-on it will be good enough.

I agree with the 450 4 strokes, but,,, I have a 250R with a 310 kit. I love it and ride like you do. I feel it's a great machine for the woods.
My 310 gives such awsome grunt, I can just imagine what a 330 is like.I rode my daughters LSR/CRF450, it runs and feels like my 310R.
Personally I don't see a reliability issue with the 2 stroke.
Just my 2 cents.

they are race ready but wallet eaters...
Remember that my 1st objective is to get the most from my money... thats why I thought about the 250
I can put lots of aft parts. Then, they become such nervous creatures
hey lt80.. so you mean your 310 is as reliable as four strokes ??
do you have the standard bolt on kit ?

I have a CGR (Chris Grissom Racing) cylinder. He put the big bore sleeve in it and did his thing (it's a mx cylinder).
As for reliability,I imagine a heads up survey would put the 4 strokes just a touch ahead.BUT,, I have put hundreds of miles on my cylinders w/o problem. I thin k my longest was just under 2 years of use. And that's racing (MX-TT-XC), trails,RR tracks, roads and dunes (Glamis rules).
Most think they have to get every once of power out of the motor and under jet them. Keep em fat, run em long is my theory.
The 310 has such awsome grunt. It eliminated most all of the "clutch faning" out of it. Just stick you thumb in it and it'll grunt up to a high rpm.
A power valve cylinder is what I'd go buy nowadays.
So,,If you were to get a year+ out of your 4 stroke, would you freshen it up anyways? If yes, then the 4 stroke is no more reliable than the 2 stroke. If no, then you better go get a 4 stroke.
I'm 46 and 250+. When I get old and fat, I will consider a 4 stroke hehe
To be honest, if money wasn't an issue, I'd have the TRX450R here right now.I'd keep the R for when I feel porky!

Thanks!
I think I'll go for the 250r, with something like a 310 and a stroker
but some say a 310 is actually a 293cc bored to its last bore (thats not good), 307cc... but on the ct racing website it said it has 4 bores left ???
is it a good combination a 310 powervalve + 20cc or more stoker -> 330 ?

Go buy a clean 250R for $3000 or so. Add a 265cc Powervalve (ESR or CT), Durablue axle, +2 A-Arms and shocks, new plastic and tires. Ride the **** out of it. Spend the remaining cash on a 12 pack of your favorite adult beverage.

why not bigger ??
The stroker isnt a good idea Ill be wrenching all the time..
but the 330 ? Ill have to machine the cases.. so what .. Ill have a true original bore 330cc ....
I thought about a pv 330 pro-x cylinder that I would have ported by sparks racing
Would you guys buy a raced 250r off ebay ??
