Well you could start by not buying a 400EX. I used to have won with ALOT of mods on it and it still didn't have the guts to keep up. Buy a 450R or YFZ450 or Z/KFX/DVX400 instead.

To make a 400EX even comparible with the new Z400's you'd need to do alot of engine and suspension work.

To make your EX run XC would be easier and you'd probably be more happy with it. 440kit, cams, full exhaust,cab,suspension,port/polish, change gearing, better rubber/wheels. I hope your made of money.

A 400ex will be fine and to be honest you don't need really any mods for a while. Rider is everything, just practice, practice, and practice some more if you are wanting to race. I wouldn't do anything more than a pipe and filter.

If your gonna race a piped 400EX don't expect to do much out there. And another thing, all that stuff you mentioned is gonna cost..i'd say around 3500$..good luck buddy.

As I said I had a 400EX with alot of stuff and I couldn't keep up to some simply modded Z400's and forget about the 450's.

An 11:1 416 piston with a stage 2 hotcam and you'll be fine against any comparably modded z400. I would spend the money on safety equipment first(good nerfs, full skids if you are gonna go XC racing, tires etc) then some suspension....+2 a-arms and shocks for the front end first if you are going MX racing...you really have to make up your mind what kind of racing you want to do before you start buying mods. A 50" wide mx quad won't make it through the woods around here, and a quad with 22" front and 20" razr2s or holeshot HDs won't make a good MX quad either. lol

I don't mean to be harsh, but if this is true than you can not ride well and have no business racing. A piped EX will be fine in amature classes, and in XC it will be more than fine in amature classes. A good set of tires would be the only beneficial thing I could think of for an amature.

just remember what your mother told you, it's not if you win or lose, it's how much fun you have while playing.
and what dad said - don't buy a slow machine and try to make it fast, buy a fast machine and make it faster.

I learned my lesson on the 416 build. Mine is super fast and handles like a dream, then came the dumb 450's......

well motox26 I don't mean to be harsh but clearly you have no idea what your talking about. My EX was modded to s**t! I drove against 2 Z400's and a DVX400 all completely stock. I had KN, hot cams, pipe, CDI...all kinds of crap..Straight line down a road..we were together through 2nd gear then..they were gone...Sure in light trails i was able to keep up no problem. But as soon as an opening came, they were gone. I've been riding for 6 or 7 years now, I know what I'm talking about and I know what I'm doing.

And...this guy doesn't even have a job...how do you expect him to pay for A-Arms, engine mods, pipes and expect all this stuff to last? He's gonna want to buy good quality stuff...and if I'm not mistaken axles/a-arms run above 300$ each at least!..suspension, over 1000$ per shock....the 400EX is no longer the way to go if your gonna race it UNLESS you have lots of money to fund it..and then, if you had the money to fund it, why don't you just buy a new bike, such as a 450 or 400..which is already stronger than the 400EX and mod that up? It will last longer and I'll bet you lots of money that your gonna like it better.

The only way your gonna win a race with a piped 400EX is if your against 300EX's and stock 400EX's..maybe a warrior or two.
