Default WANNABE WOMAN RACER X - HOW DO I START?

Really need some tips on how to:

1) Get into racing my quad;
2) How to get sponsored;
3) Basically, where to start.

I am a woman, 34 years old coming up on 35 but I look good for my age, some would say great, thanks to my wonderful plastic surgeon and lots of money, ouch. I am athletic but I have a life threatening disease, Lupus, which only sometimes keeps me down so far.

Anyway, that doesn't stop me from riding well, taking calculated risks and flat out....opening it up in 5th...yeah. My baby is a 700R and she does well for me....the very first time I rode the bike it was an instant connection. Hills, straight aways...all of it she tackles it for me and I feel like we are one....sounds like a chick, I know....but seriously....instant connection. I agree with the guys about the front shocks though....I think they could use a little adjustment, especially for the shumps....I call them shumps, not whoops, because they are bumps and I them.

Bottom line is, racing my quad is something that I want to say I've done. There have been a lot of things like that for me. First there was a photo shoot...did that, now I can say I did it. Then, I learned how to surf with the best of 'em...did that, do that, and it 's my first love...I was published in a couple of mags, been to baja several times, etc. etc.....everybody's got a story....anyway...Same thing with racing my quad....I think I can hold my own.

Now, I know that just the mere fact of owning a new state of the art bike doesn't make me race quality but I ride fast, flexible, intuitively, I choose good lines I think. I think I could go up against some other women my age and maybe...
if I'm lucky....win. If I don't win, I could say I participated and that's a huge deal for a woman my age, mother of three, potentially life threatening disease, etc. Just the fact that I participated would be huge for me.

Anyway...I am clueless. Can anyone help me get a foot in the door or give me some tips?

P.S. I have daughters and they all ride..660's!..cuter than spotted puppies....especially the 8 year old....she could probably make some advertiser a lot of money because she's just so darn cute on her little 80 and all the gear...we put a new pipe on it and she's a little firecracker...loves it...

Thanks.....

Joy

First place to start is figuring out what sort of racing your interested in? you wanna MX, XC, GP, drag, Etc.... after you figure out what style you wanna get involved in, its as simple as outfitting your quad to meet the promotors requirements (nerfs, tether kill, number plates, Etc...) after than its just about goin out and hittin the track

I need to make a few phone calls and take my quad in and get it fitted but Thanks.....maybe you'll see my dust?

I really don't like nerf bars! Bummer.

How cut throat? ? I just want to have fun and say I did it....I know who I am....maybe I should quit while I'm ahead then and just compete between myself, my raptor and the wide open spaces? I suppose the cattyness goes to the track with the females that who take it there. Women already me because I'm really hot thanks to the wonders of modern technology...and I'm not ting you either....most of them me.

How are they different from the guys? Is it because they feel that we have something to prove?

Would you do it if you were me? I want to live to ride again....It's not worth that much....I don't need the money really....just want to do it....

Yeah. I guess you are right. Unless your gear is Thor's new pink and you wear white Tech 10's....oh yeah and my chest protector is made for a woman so it's curved in the front and has a spine in the back....very cool...

Thanks....I'm going to check it out further and the first thing I'm going to do is put my bike in the shop.

Happy riding....

Hey Joy,
Here's a link to some info from the ATVA about the different types of racing and how to get started. You might also want to check out the WORCS Series, it's a national XC series that has a couple races in CA.
Also, here is a website that has a list of tracks and other places to ride/race in CA.

As far as getting sponsored goes, you need to write up a race resume that includes basic info about you, your quad, what your goals are for the coming year, and list race results. Most companies start accepting resume's in Sept. and Oct.
If you don't want to solicite sponsors directly, you can also check out places like sponsorhouse.com and list your resume with them (for a fee).

Best of luck to you!

Hey, I am glad to see more women wanting to get involved.
My sister races and she is always glad to have more girls to race with.

To begin with, like the others have stated you need to figure out what kind of racing you want to do. Considering the type of bike that you and your daughters have, you might want to try a race like the WORCS series. There is one this weekend at Taft CA. You might want to check it out and go watch. Hang out and talk to the other ladies. We might be there -

The bike you have will make a difference in the races you do. There is a lot of mods that can be added to the quads to make them race ready. Special parts for each type of style of race. Getting a bike in race mode is $$ well spent. Research the type of racing you want to do. Flat track mods are different than MX and so on. Also with your bike you might be limited to the class that you can race in with the cc's that you have. At ITP the women class does not have a limitation, but one like yours could be to big for the MX track. My sister rides a 500 in the women's class, but it is set up for MX.

There are several web pages that you might want to check out - I've listed mine and my sister's- on it there is up coming events of all types in California. Also check out www.613racing.com- She is a friend of ours and she has been racing for some time.

Sponsorship will come as more you race. Most companies take resumes' starting around September. There is also sponsorhouse.com. Be careful though, you can join there membership for $$, but you can get about the same results with a good resume and race history and knowing when to contact the companies.

The biggest thing that I can tell you to do is go and watch the diferent races, talk to the women racers and see how the promotors are treating them and what experieces that they can give you- The more people you know in the industry the faster you will improve and learn.

Congrats to you Joy!
You do whatever your heart desires. I drag race with a friend who has Lupus. We hit the track every time it's open and he doesnt let it keep him from doing what he likes. So glad to see so many more women getting into the scene where it was mostly dominated by men before.
