250R's are good machines, but they can be lots of work. If it was easy to have one, there would be no one buying 450R's, YFZ's or Raptor's. My personal feeling is that anyone can go fast on a new machine with a warranty. Look at lots of the 15-16 year olds riding now: little mechanical ability/know how and lots of payments...

If you have any doubts about your mechanical ability or question the machine, I'd consider a newer four stroke. Most are dead-nuts reliable and pretty fun to play on.

Banshee's have just as many problems as the 250's, if not more. Anything you get will show its age, just be willing to fix what's wrong, whether it is an '86 or an '06...

banshee's everything breaks in 2's and there parts are twice as expensive -- go get a knew bike with a warranty !!!!!
then the only thing you have to really worry about is changing the oil filter ,and just routine maintenece

because you are way to worried about age to really understand what it means to put your as$ on a 250r

and if you get a 250r, you would probably only enjoy it,until it broke/breaks

i got 3100 right now im gonna get 4000 before i buy one so i have extra cash to fix it if it needs anything. im so excited.. I just have to beat a predator 500, it has no 4th gear and a white brothers air filter.. think a stock 250r would beat that?

 

personally, i would buy any year as long as the frame is straight with no cracks and a motor with undamaged engine cases . then id send the motor for bottom end work (seals, bearings, trans gear inspection, new clutch) and have it machined to accpet a big bore kit (330 or 350). install aftermarket shocks and if money is not a problem, install extended a-arms and axle.

 

3100 is more than enough go to www.monkeyads.com theres a race ready 1 for 2400--and theres 2 in my area selling for 2300 and 1 for 3200 and they are both indecent shape almost bought 1 a while back but didn't need it EITHER WAY 3100 is more than enough

 

Isn't it funny how the 250R's with thousands of dollars in aftermarket parts keep dropping in value, while nice stockers or restorations (like mine) are still holding their value or going up.

I looked at a CT 330R with a powdercoated frame, TCS and Laeger's/Lonestar suspension, beadlocks and every TT/flattrack gadget you could ever want the other day for $3,300... I started to buy it just to part out... Then again, the suspension would be nice on my cruiser and the 330 would be great in the ATC...

Shop around, it's been a long time since I've seen a stock-frame MX machine without serious frame damage.

 

its as simple as -priced to sell, or just for sale --you have to remember is, if you have cash you can get a new yfz or 450r for like 6200 cash or less so a 250r can only be worth what it is.
all the new innovations and advanced quads in a box, its hard to get someone with a ton o cash to come your way
what you have is, worth only what someone will pay
no matter how much you've invested

 

I find that they are easy to sell, but the market is much smaller... People now look at magazines and never see 250R's. The only people willing to pay higher prices for very-nice 250's are those that know their potential, remember what they were, or want to be different/vintage. I have turned down very good prices for mine, not because it's special to anyone else, but because I'll never find another one like it...
