Most of them use any one that they can get there hands on. On the front and rear they are rectangular in shape. Sometimes you can cut the front one to fit a little better inside your front bumper. This past weekend all riders had rectangular ones on the front bumper and some where vertical and some hort.

If you don't know how to put a number plate on the rear grab bar you are in some real trouble. How is the rest of your quad put together and does it stay together for a full day of riding. You must be one of the people that I pick up the nuts, bolts, springs, mufflers, etc at the starting line of the races after you leave the start.
For your answer for mounting the number plate, use chewing gum. Bubble gum works best.

I used a "NO LOITERING" sign from the hardware store. The back side was all black, and I took some white reflective tape and made the numbers. I zip tied it on the grab bar. It lasted 8 races and some ditch rides before one side ripped loose. Just fasten the heck out of it so it don't fall off during a race, where I race no number plate means DNF. I also took some of the white reflective tape and made numbers on the front cowl.
Someday, I hope to get a REAL number plate. It has been a dream of mine since my first race when everybody else had the cool number plates. I came in 5th. I am sure it was because of my homemade number plate flapping over to the side and covering the exhaust outlet which caused a serious lack of power. I know that is what it was, I just know it...
