PRACTICE,PRACTICE,PRACTICE. Nothing will get you better than practice. A good set of shocks will really knock some seconds off of you lap time. If you are truly interested in becoming a great rider look into a school. Joe Byrd, arguably one of the best riders, actually lives in Tennessee also. It is kind of pricey but he puts on a school that teaches you everything from diet to exercise not to mention he teaches you to ride on a pro track.

Becoming a better rider is also usually free ... as long as you follow the practice, practice, practice advice that Stoopidbot gave you. I've seen people with stock quads beat out modified machines just because they were a better rider. Check out open practices on tracks around your area. Work on holeshots, whoops, and corners. These are three areas I think every rider can improve on, and these three things will make you fast ... because everyone can (and does) jump.
Just be sure to check with Tennessee AMA Motocross to be certain there is a class available to you. You may be limiting yourself to a single class if you modify your quad too much. Depending on your skill level, some of the production limited classes (if Tennessee has them) might be more competitive for you as well.

Learn to lean!!When going to a turn shift weight to the inside of the turn to better your handling and ability to come out of the turn faster,But practice makes perfect!!!

I'm in Colorado so can't help you too much there. Send Joe Byrd a email, he will help you out. Tell him that you are a youngster looking to get into racing and you would like to know where you can race in Tennessee. He lives in Union City.
