Default Help with atv tires and local rim

Guys....we are a team participating in baja ..which is organised by SAE
We are building our own atv
I had a small doubt regarding the tires!
We plan to use 25x8x12 tires (baja trax),the question is,can we use these tires with 5 inch wide rims?i noticed in the forums that there is not much restriction in the rim width..but this is a special case..as we are using a rim of a normal car..i will post the pics if you like, any help would be really appreciated!
I did not know where to post this so i posted it in general>other..sorry if its the wrong place, please move it to the appropriate section
Thank you

Welcome to the forums.

The tire width is 8 inches and your tire rim is only 5 inches wide. The tire will not work.

It will stretch across, but your sidewalls will be weaker. Not something I'd do if I were doing a baja. Or anything for that matter.

I can't speak for that site, but recommending a 6 inch rim for a 9.5 inch tire does not sound like a good fit.

But they are putting a wider tire on a smaller width rim. That is more feasible the stretching a tire across a rim.

I'm pretty sure if you research what other drivers are running as far as a tire/rim set up goes, you'd find they mostly stick with the right size. I'm also sure that at some point, someone has tried a different tire/rim combo to see what happened.

The question I'd ask is, if it doesn't work, how far are you willing to walk? Provided of course it wasn't a catastrophic failure and resulting in a very serious accident.
