Default Here's what I want in a utility quad. What are some recommendations?

Had a 91 Warrior years ago and just recently sold a 99 Polaris Sport 400 2 stroker. Now looking for more of a utility quad that has some sport feel. (Can these utilities catch just a little air safely?) I read the reviews on www.atvtv.com already.

Ideally, here's what I want:

Probably pre-owned, as want to try to stay within 4-5K. (Less is better. I haven't shopped yet, so if I can get a decent quad for 3K I will definitaly consider it!)

4WD selectable

Prefer auto with engine braking a must! What goes up 4000ft must come down! (Would consider a manual tranny)

Eventually would like to have a winch.

400-500cc is adequate (5'9" about 175)

Want to haul enough gear for an overnight camp trip.

Would prefer the ideal "sport utility" feel vs. a huge, bulky, sluggish machine.

Is 50-60MPH reasonable?

And lighter the better, right?

Thanks in advance for all opinions. If you could include the "whys" and a model year if used...

Yamaha Kodiak 450 or Outlander 400. They seem to fit your needs.

A outlander 400 sounds like it would work for you, its defenitly more sport than utility, and if you can find a 2003, new, itll easily be in your price range. Also has a 3 year warrentee.
Ive given up on buying used machines....I finally figured out that theres always a reason someone else is dumping their quad...and it aint good for the next guy. If youre still going to buy used, get someone who is knowledgable about that machine to look it over, for you.

I loved my Scram but rack space is too limited. Also, I'm looking for better fender protection and a place to put a winch. I put fender extensions on my Sport which made a little improvement, but not much.

If I am looking at a Kodiak 450 used, which years should I watch for? Also, would a Kodiak 400 be sufficient. I hear what you're saying about buying a used machine and you definately have to watch out, but ever so often I seen one in our paper like new that a guy bought then couldn't ride due to new kid, lost job, moving, etc.

Used is usually abused. With the great rates everyone is offering it may be cheaper to get new anyhow.
Eigers will run 55 - 60MPH all day long and have a mechanical 4WD selector, no wires to break, no little motors to go bad or replace.
But this probably wont fit your sport junping needs, lands hard.
Engine braking is great on the auto.
You can probably pick one up for les than 5K OTD brand new.
Eiger2, out.

The wolverine is supposed to be a helluva machine. There aren't any Yami dealers around here so it isn't real popular here, but thats one Of the machines that should be on the short list.
