Dirtbike vs ATV
#1
Okay, i have been doing alot of thinking and i am tore between the two. I have a chance to get a cr85 dirtbike and pay cash for it and not have to make payments, or get a 400ex and make payments for the next 5 years. I am only 19 (5'4" 120 lbs) and am still in college. I used to have a 93 300ex and i wish now that i had not sold it to my buddy, im going crazy without having something to ride. I just want to ride again, and yes my money is a lil tight right now, still in school. And the other thing is all my buddys that i would ride with have atvs and only one other guy has a dirtbike. I have been riding atvs since i was 9, and i have only riden a dirtbike a few times. I like the challange of trying new things and if i was to get a dirtbike i would hope to eventually get into racing. So if anyone has an opinion on this subject any info would be a huge help. Thanks.

I dont know about you but an 85 seems way too small. I was racing 60's and 70's when I was 10 years old. And those were 2 stroke.
If you want a bike go with a 125 2 stroke or a 125+ 4 stroke. The 400ex is a much better fit for you, imo, than an 85.

I think that him being 120lbs, a CR85 would rip pretty good. Being 5'4, you won't be able to touch the ground very well on a 125. If you want to eventually get into motocross with dirt bikes, an 80 would be a good start.
A 2 stroke 80 with someone your size on it will burn a 300ex. A 400ex would eat your lunch though in a drag.
An 80 can be real fun in the trails cause you can manhandle the thing and pretty soon you'll feel like a pro MX racer on the thing. Good confidance booster.

i'd say it all depends on what youre buying it for... sure, to have fun. but what do your buddys do?
do they go on tracks or rough trails, mud holes or wide open ranges? it makes a huge difference as i have most recently found out. i have a dirt bike, 100r, and love the speed and ruggedness of it, but its insane in snow and i can't carry another person or anything for work. you need something that will keep you entertained in a number of ways, and atvs are just more capable of satisfying a rider. unless of course you really want to go into motorcross, i would suggest an atv.
the 85r is what you make it. if you do get one and it is a bit slow for you, after market that puppy... or just buy an used atv or something, cause 5 years is an awful long time to slip into debt when you aren't even that sure of what you want yet. just my two cents worth.

For casual trail riding in a dirt bike look at a DR200. It's 4 stroke, has enough power for any trail and isn't as tall in the seat as a YZ or CR 125 or 250. For a guy your size a 400ex would be a sweet machine. Very comfortable and quick enough to keep up with most trail rides.
Dirt bikes are fun for track riding and light trail work. ATV's are more comfortable for long rides.

Are you crazy, a CR500 as a first dirt bike, Those things are a hand full for someone who knows how to ride a 2-stroke bike well.
