Why is it that almost every salesman knows less about the prouduct he sells than I know?
I have only seen 1 salesmen that knew more than me about the product he sold. Machanics are the same way.

I remeber going to a Dodge dealership in 1993 and a Dodge Viper ( dodges most exotic, fastest, awsome vehicle ever) drove up. I see the mechanic walk-up to the Dodge owner and ask,"Wow is that the new Chevrolet Camaros?" The owner then said,"DON'T TOUCH MY F*#KING CAR," of course all I could do was fall down laughing.

The same thing happen when I went to buy my Arctic Cat 500. Ever question I asked the salesman he didn't know. After I asked him how much a replacement skid plate would cost he rolled his eyes and said that he wasn't a mechanic, I walked away.

If you have had similar experiences, please post them here.

Arctic Cat 500, To all dealer who know nothing, Arctic Cat makes atv's.

I went through the same thing. I had one salesman when at a Honda/Yamaha dealer tell me the big bear he had was a '00 when I knew it was a '99. I told him that and he said yes it is. I then told him all the different changes they made for '00. He actually went out and looked to see if I was right! He wouldn't even help me after that. Then another dealer told me and a friend that he could give us this price on two anytime. Looking at the price it was MSRP +Tax....****. Needless to say I didn't buy it from those.

And you expected something MORE???

Let me tell ya'.

I am in sales. Yes, believe it or not.

Most of the people in sales are there not because of their technical knowledge, but because they are good at getting other people to like them and say "YES". It is truly rare to run into a (insert car, truck, cycle, etc. here) salesperson to actually know what the heck they are selling. BUT, that doesn't make them good sales people necessarily. Knowing a product and selling it are two completely different sides of the brain. Take engineers for example: They typically know their product, but most of them couldn't sell a dollar for 50 cents. BTW, I am a Sales Engineer - sort of a rarity myself - as I have found out.

The posts above are quite typical. The people mentioned are selling because they probably are likable people (at least if they actually make a living by selling), but they don't know anything more that you do. Buying and selling are very emotional things for most people. Anytime you want to buy something, it really helps to make logical decisions about WHAT to buy. The "how much" to pay question should be more like "how much do I NEED it?". If you let your wants overrule your needs, you'll end up paying too much for most things.

Bottom line - Don't expect the salesperson to know squat! Use them to get what you want for what you want to pay. Don't let them steer you. YOU steer them.

As someone once said to me (I live by this line) - EVERYTHING is negotiable...

I would like to apologize to the salesmen who actually know about what they are selling, but I was going on what I have experienced.

SandmanBlue, I paid almost $6500 for my 500, you think I do it because he is a nice guy?
HELL NO!!!!! If that salesmen wants my money he better at least TRY to get my questions anwsered. Do you think you would sell things, what do yo sell, if you anwsered your questions by rolling your eyes and saying,"I don't know I'm not a mechanic. Hey you want to go work out the numbers?"

Arctic Cat 500, The best? It's up to you.

Bonet, I agree with you 100 %.
Non-existing customer service is a negative aspect of a good economie.
I spend time to educate myself on the product I want to buy. Most of time I know much more than the salesperson.
/ When my son was a high school student ,
he was a "profesional" salesman for at
least 6 companies with completely different
fields...??? do I have to continue??/

We could talk about this subject for hours.
C'ya.
