Sport ATV's vs. Utility ATV's? Which is better?

the z400 is an excellent trail bike. i have taken my z400 in teh trails abotu 7 times now and was only stuck once for about 30 seconds. i think the z400 is the best overall bike. you can do tons of mods,it has reverse, the yfz isnt that much faster and the z400 is cheap. i think you shoudl deffinitly look a tthe z400

For me, I need both. In the winter (80 degrees and clear blue sky!) we ride the desert, where a well suspended sport bike is the ticket. Out there, you would be totally miserable bashing big whoops on a huge heavy ute.
In summer, when the desert is to hot, we ride the cool mountains. Lots of big rocks, stream crossings, some snow, etc. Here we need the high clearance of a ute. A low slung sport bike would just get hung up all the time.
The YFZ is a fairly specialized MX machine! I have found it to be a pretty poor trail ride. You might want to consider a more well rounded sport bike, like the Z400 for example.

hey, hey, dont be bashin the YFZ450s trail ride, you just gotta know your quad better, but it is definately fun but can create some problems with harsh terrain that a utility would just roll over

Ok, so I want to go sport, the question I have now is which one. I said on my last post that I really wanted a YFz 450. However it was just brought to my attention that the Raptor 660 may actually be a better all around bike. I would like to be able to take someone for a ride every now and then, and I was told that with a 660 a comfortable 30-minute ride was possible. I was told that the ergonomics of the bike are better for rides over 3 miles, with or without someone else. How big of a deal do you think ergonomics are? I know that it makes a difference, but how big. The guy also told me that a YFZ 450 would walk away from a Raptor 660 after you hit about 40 mph, and that taking someone for a ride on the 450 for more than a quick zip around the park is really not fez able.

Well I have narrowed it down to two bikes. The YFZ 450 and the Z400. I know all the technical differences, but I wounder how much you are really going to notice after you get one and get used to it. The z400 has alot of good all around features, but the looks and that extra speed on the 450 makes it hard to give up. I think what I am going to do know is post a top ten question asking people to give the top ten reasons that the 450 is better than the 400 and vise versa. Mabye that will help. Look for the knew topic or keep replying to this one. Thanks

well if your just MX racing or on wide open smooth trails get the YFZ450 but if you plan on riding tighter trails with more ruff terain get the Z400. you dont need the speed really unless your racing and anyways the Z can go 74mph idk about the YFZ so id say you should get the Z unless ur racing mx or on open smooth trails.

If you goota work, go utility. If all you want to do is have fun, go sport. I personally like utility atvs even though I don`t use my 750 BF for work. I just feel more secure on a utility atv, it being bigger and all.

the initial question is which type is better? It's easy. if you're a fat, old, redneck then get the utility quad. if you've got any riding talent at all and your wife doesn't carry your "boys" around in her purse then you can do quite well in lots of terrain with a sport atv. you just have to suck it up and not ride like a granny. leave that for the 4x4 guys.

Whoa, wait a minute... I resemble that remark... and although you are definitely expressing an opinion that only a child/kid could harbor, and your aim is to really get us old farts riled up, let me make a few well chosen comments. First of all, if you look at statistics... you know, the numbers that you add up, (Probably using a calculator since you probably can't get past 20 due to running out of fingers and toes), you will find that on average, the manufacturers sell 7 to 8 Utes for every sport model. Hmmm...
Speed, is not on everyone's mind it would appear. Your opinion would be in the minority then... and although I served and fought 20 years in the military for your right to say it, I cannot help but dismiss it as irrelevant.
As for a Ute versus a sport... it depends greatly on where you intend to ride. If you find yourself riding mainly on flat or groomed trails or at speed, then by all means get a sport model... You will find it a blast. But if you deviate from the normal, and find yourself wanting to go places where 4x4 may be necessary to negotiate the trails... then you may want to consider something else. In my case, I own both types, but I find that I ride the Ute more often than not, because these days, 1) I like the comfort and gizmo's I get with it. 2) I ride in areas where winches are mandatory 3) being handicapped, I rely on things like reverse, electric start, winch, GPS, radio etc.
I also volunteer with the local rescure squad to assist in "rescueing" guys like you from the trails after you take a wild boo boo on your go fast rocket and lose it. I find that this occurs too often. Funny thing, they all say crashing sucks after the fact... Must be something about having the ground pounded into the pores of what skin you have left that leaves a person with a new enlightenment that STUPID HURTS.
So next time you have to get your butt rescued by us tired old men with red necks, just remember, we are still out there... we probably learned it all the hard way, and can compare scars with the best of them.. and we did it at a time when we didn't have the handling and suspensions you have today... You are not going to out brave an old timer... We have been there, done that.. so show me something new...
Now I know that I have used some pretty big words here, and you might have to go back and look a few up in the dictionary.. (you do know what that is don't you?) but the fact remains, that we appreciate your being out there on the trails right beside us... It provides us old guys with a lot of entertainment and more than a few chuckles when you show your skills at thinking...
This reminds me of an old racing addage.... there are old racers, and bold racers.. but you won't find any Old, Bold racers...

I agree 100% though, depends all on the terrain and intended use.
