I rarely buy an extended warranty.
1. The cost is outrageous for the value of the machine. I'll bet the extended warranty is more than 10% of your entire purchase price.
2. Generally if something serious breaks, it will do so during the original factory warranty.
3. Damage from abuse will not be covered under an extended warranty. So rolling or jumping and breaking a machine will not be covered. Dealers will look real hard to find abuse so it doesn't have to be covered.
4. Having a five year extended warranty is a long time. Ask your friends how long they own their machines. I'll bet a lot of them replace their machines every 3 to 4 years.
Just my opinion.

Extended warranties are nothing more than insurance contracts. Oftentimes they are not with the manufacturer but with a provate, third party provider. It is risk-shifting for a fee, nothing more and perhaps something less. These contracts are very carefully worded so that things you may think are covered are not. Abuse, wear and tear, deductibles, depreciated values for certain compaonents, gaskets, seals, fluids and some labor excepted out; the lists go on and on. And, for what it's worth, dealers make a higher mark-up on the extended warranties than they do on the unit being purchased!
So fat is the deal on the extended warranties that a certain Harley Davidson dealer around here that I and others will no longer deal with required you to purchase an extended warranty in order to be able to buy a new Harley during the times when supllies could not keep pace with demands.
Look, my advice is not always right for all people in all situaitons all the time, but keep in mind that it's an expensive insurance contract. I generally do not beat equipment or mechanized toys that I buy and am big on maintainance, so I shy away from these extended warranties and have saved a bundle in the process. Of course, now that I've gone and put my foot in my mouth here, I guess I'm setting myself up for an expensive component failure just out of warranty. ??!!??
