Bump- I have an idea. Instead of me just asking what quad would be good for what I want. Can you guys tell me what parts make a quad good for stunts like jumps, wheelies, and those kind of tricks, and whats parts are good for long bumpy trail rides, and then with that info I'll be able to look for a quad more on my own. Are there any websites that can explain to me more about how quads work and what kind of part is better for what?

Well, the saying wider is better is correct, start with a better platform if you want to stunt. A wider rear axle, better tires, etc. That helps with trails as well.

Well lets start out with the basics shall we... First off, you really need to nail down where you will be riding this machine. Will you be on private property or public riding areas? You mention that you are 14, and yes, some states DO enforce the size limitations. If you intend to ride in public areas, you need to comply. Some states even have a licensing program.. so depending on where you live, you may even have to take a safety course.. which will require you to be within the state's limits. Check it out before you buy. the Trail police are clamping down on violaters.. don't become a statistic... Some states even confiscate the quad.. so make sure of the local laws.

Assuming you will be on private property and are legally able to ride, there are a lot of people that do go bigger, however, I'd recommend you not go too big. Yamaha has a grizzly 125, and their Blaster 200 is just about as big as I would recommend for a novice. There are hundreds of hop up stuff for the blaster.. and it will keep you happy for quite a long time. New ones are about $3K . If you go used, get a late model that has the disk brakes.

As for the type of riding you intend to do... let me throw a little caution at you. racing around, doing wheelies, blasting berms etc are all fun on a quad. Only problem is, you are not skilled.. so be CAREFULL. Learn how to make good judgement calls, and DON'T get hurt. These things are not toys... you have to respect them.

Make damn sure you set aside enough cash to buy the proper safety gear too. Helmet, eye protection, boots that go over the ankles... (They don't have to be MX boots, just leather boots over the ankles) I'd recommend a jersey, long pants, CHEST PROTECTOR and gloves too. IF you can't afford them, do something else.

There are a lot of people out in the world that would like to see ATV's go away. Each year, they collect the injury statistics and try and convince congress to ban them. Also, each year, people who act like idiots go tearing around and damaging trails, gardens, yards, even run them up and down the street... Don't become a hooligan like that. We are fighting to save the sport.. and need you to act responsibly.. and correct your buddies if you see them act out.. We dont' need to give the anti ATV lobby any more ammunition, and I want to make sure you get to enjoy riding for a long time. Most importantly without any injury.

Good luck on your choices.. and don't go too big for your first ATV... You have time to go bigger once you turn 16 and have some seat time under your belt.

I dont at all intend to start stunting as soon as I get a quad. At first I would go to wide open places and just ride around getting the feel for it, then move on too trails. I want to make sure Im perfect at regular safe riding, before I even do the simplest stunts.
Thanks for your concern though.

Yeah well, we were kids once too.. and we all start out with good intentions. Only problem is, peer pressure, and this thing about testosterone kicking in and we tend to unscrew our brains and leave them on the kitchen table before going out for a ride. Most of us have the scars to prove it too.. and some of us have aches and pains where I would have sworn there were no muscles that plague us in our older years... it is all relative.

Keep up the good work.. and make a promise to your self and keep it. Be safe... One more kid in the newspaper is one too many...

Welcome to the club...

Thats funny, safe riding? I was poping wheelies before i rode a trail, i did it on accident, thought it was cool, and now im here. "If it wasn't for the uncontrolable urge to impress girls we'd all be sitting around waiting to die." All kidding aside, try to be safe, your going to get that adrenlin rush and then saftey goes out the window, and remember most ER room nurses are cute.

Let me go ahead and tell you "KEEP THE RUBBER SIDE DOWN" now see you learned it the easy way. Dont go try it like I did and watch out for those stumps that appear out of nowhere and right into your way.
