Default When is it time to trade in?

Just wondering what would be the 'average' time for a guy to trade in his ATV for a newer model? I think I remember the dealer saying something about a ATV being considered almost brand new up to 300 hours, but I can't remember.

Mine is a 2002 (red) Prairie 400 Kawasaki 4x4 with currently approx. 1000 km and 150 hours.

Also, what do you think it's resale value would be? I got it for a bargain ($7800 CDN, $6300 US) from the dealer as he wanted to open up space for new models. Bought it in August 2002. It's a farm ATV, but it is in a building when not in use and gets washed every once in a while, so it is in really good condition.

A couple of questions for you... is it paid for? Do you ever have more than one person on it at the same time? Do friends come over wanting to ride, but have no machine? If the answer is yes to these.. .you might want to consider keeping it around and just getting an upgrade for yourself. Generally, you are not going to get a lot of $ for it in trade anyway. So why not keep it around and let your spouse/buddies ride it with you, instead of doubling up or having to sit on the sidelines watching you have all the fun.

Yep, I paid in full before I left the dealership...I am a man who likes to avoid loans and payment plans if I can. Generally the split on 1 or 2 riders is 50/50. And most of my friends have their own ATV's, so it only gets used by me and my father, but still, that means it gets run every 1-2 days during the summer.

I am wanting to trade it in as I would like to 'upgrade' to a 4-stroke from the current 2-stroke.

Wait a minute, I thought the Praire is a four stroker. (Mine is a 2002 (red) Prairie 400 Kawasaki 4x4 with currently approx. 1000 km and 150 hours.)

Whoops, my mistake. Guess I was still recovering from my hangover a bit. Yeah, the Kawasaki is a 1 cylinder, 4 stroke. I meant to say that I wanted to trade it in for a 2 cylinder.

Trade it! You'll be glad you did. Life is short, enjoy it while you can.

Sell then buy. Never trade.

Sounds to me that your father is using it a lot. He might appreciate taking ownership... and then the two of you can ride at the same time. Given that trade in values are not going to be all that great... it might be a better thing to just keep hold of it.
