Short ATV
#1
A am looking to obtain an ATV that will fit the width of my pickup in front of the 5th wheel hitch. This would be used for hunting and the main consideration is to have someting that I can haul across the country with my trailer. The overall length would have to be around 65 inches. It does not need to be all that powerful-maybe a 200cc. Light weight would be a plus with getting it stowed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Randy

You mentioned hunting, so I assume you want a utility with racks??? In the 200ish class, you won't be getting 4wd. I would suggest you take a look at the Honda Recon. Take a tapemeasure and go down to the dealership. A good dealer, should be willing to load it in your truck to judge the fit.

Lifting a quad over the 5th wheel base is going to be interesting. Side loading is possible - but then your dropping into the box at a 90 degree angle.
Have you considered building a ATV carrier on the back of the 5th wheel?

Guys,
Thanks for the suggestions. It probably makes sense to take the truck to a dealer to see what will fit sideways.
To help explain my thoughts, to load the ATV I would move the 5th wheel hitch to the side, load the ATV then slide it 90 degrees and reinstall the hitch. The hitch is held in place with 4 pins and is relatively easy to remove and install.
Maybe I will have to go with a two-wheel bike. I had a Rokon 2 wheel drive bike but we had a barn fire and it was in the barn. I was hoping for something with more wheels to minimize the chance of my falling over!
I built a carrier on the back of the 5th wheel trailer to haul the Rokon (total weight about 300 pounds) but the trailer frame (or the way I installed everything) could not handle the weight. I have some ideas to improve this option but I do not think it would ever carry a full sized ATV. Even if it could handle the weight there would be a significant degradation in the trailer handling with that much weight that far behind the wheels.
How silly would a grown man look riding a 90cc ATV? (;-)

How silly? I dunno. The fellow with the Lear jet thinks my Piper Tripacer is silly but I know fighter pilots who wish they could fly my 16 foot Pitts Special. Its all in the eye of the beholder I guess. There is always bigger better faster - always.

I can barely squeeze my kid's mini in sideways. Think I'd look for a little pit bike before going that route.

You thought about a trailer? Works pretty good with an anti-sway bar if you keep your speeds down.

Guys, Thanks for the responses. A trailer for an ATV would work in some states but many will not allow a trailer to pull a trailer. I have purchased a RedCat 90 which I can haul on the back of the 5th wheel trailer. I will give it a try this year and see how it works. Currently in the process of adding a bow holder. Really an impressive bike for the money. Randy
