motorcycle or atv?

I am wedged between buying a motorcycle and an atv. Bikes are a lot cheaper and are a lot of fun. quads are a lot of fun but they are just too expensive, but u can ride year round (Connecticut). Im not sure what to do... any suggestions?

If you look at my sig you can tell I prefer 2 wheels. My opinion is not that popular at a atv site, and it shouldnt be. Either will provide enjoyment, you need to figure out what would be best for you. This is as good a place as any to ask.

For me, Ive had motorcycles all my life. I enjoy the technical riding more than the blasting down the dirt trails, and as i get older, the falling down and getting banged up, is getting more and more painful, and a guy just doesnt heal as well as before. I got into quads, so i can still do the tough 4wheeling, and not have to worry about slipping on a slippery log, hidden in puddles, and falling down.
You might want to check into riding areas, before buying. It used to be there were alot of legal places to go on a motorcycle, and now the legal atv trails outnumber the places a motorcycle can go...at least here in mn.
At first it seemed like the motorcycle had a big advantage over the quad..it was street legal, and i could just ride from trail to trail, with out trucking. But it isnt that much of a hassle to put ramps on the truck and load up, and go on to the next trail.
It seems like all the areas, that used to give me the pucker factor, the slippery mud, soft sand, and steep hills, on a motorcycle....i now seek out on a quad, because thats where the fun is.
Check into used quads..there is a steep drop in price for one or two year old quads, and most have very few miles, and are just like new..except for scratches, and theres no tax to pay, ...most of the time. And usually the first quad you buy, is replaced by something better in a year or two, and youre loss when you sell will be much lower, because the first depreication has already happened.

Best advice I can give is match the machine to the terrain. Take an extended walk where you plan to spend your time riding. Hard pack, muddy, sandy? Narrow or wide? Are the trails long enough to justify packing food or equipment? And last look around at what everyone else is riding. Usually a pretty good indicator as to what does well and what doesn't.

Good advice RL's I've ridden street bikes But, prefer to ride atv's to m/c's. Along with the information RL mentioned, are you going to be riding alone? with other atv'ers or m/c's? I wish we could ride with MWQ more But, he prefers to ride his m/c's on single track that is, a little to narrow for a quad If you have little ones, quads might be the way to go. Especially if they are young and need training wheels to ride safely.

Well atvs get a lot better traction in the snow and dirtbikes to ride in the snow you need studded tires and you still will slide like crazy and spend more time on the ground, also for dune riding you need a really powerful dirtbike unlike an atv.

Duning, why do you need a really powerful dirtbike and not a quad?
As for choosing between the two, I would choose what you mostly ride with. Like what does you buddies/family ride? If your by yourself, then whatever you think you will have more fun on.
