2001 400EX vs. 2005 400EX
I'm buying my first ATV(first of my own). When i was younger I rode lots of 3-wheelers and quads but haven't much in the past years. I decided on the 400ex b/c i wanted something reliable and decently fast to atleast somewhat keep up with my friends(banshee,yzf450,raptor) but also not be too much for me to start with getting the hang of everything.
But to my questions. I've found a couple 400 and the two that stick out are a 2001 With Big Gun exhaust K&N filter and carbs jetted, nerf bars and bark busters. the guy is asking $3000, but i think he'll take 2700.
This morning my best friend called me and he found a 2005 400EX thats bone stock, but the guy is hurting for money and wants $3500 for it.
I like the new stylings of the 05 and the idea of having something with alot less hours, but i kinda wanted to stay below the $3k mark. Is the 05 worth the extra $800? I dont think i need the added power from the exhaust jet kit ect, but of course i want it.
Opinions? I'm rusty on this topic so i'm not too sure whats the better deal/option

2001 400EX vs. 2005 400EX
My guy is chking out the '05 this afternoon, its in Jackson,TN and i'm in Nashville. He's a good friend of my best friend and he buys and sells ATVs wholesale. So i trust his judgement on it. I know for the $$ its a deal just waiting now to see for sure what kind of condition its in. Unless it has been wrecked or something I should have it tomorrow. :-)

Just so happens I have owned a 01' and now own a 05' 400ex. For the prices you listed, go with the 05' for sure.
For one, the value of the 05' is much higher than the 5 year old 01', you could re-sale the 05' for much more $ down the road. And more than likely the 05' will have a lot less hours on it. It's normally good to buy things stock anyways.
Second, the 05's are a little bit better anyways, you get reverse with them, up to date styling, and the 05's are little quicker do to the closer range gear ratio in the tranny. Buy the 05' and it should last you a long time, and the whole time there will be a smile on your face.
