Fit should be snug but not tight or binding. When you turn your head the helmet should turn with you - if you can turn your head inside the helmet than it's too big. Almost all ATV stores have a selection of helmets - you can try them on in the store.

Measure around your head just above the eyebrows to get a good reading. Different helmets feel a little different because of different types and placement of padding. Get a measurement and go try a few on. I bought 2 online and added a 1/2 inch to the measurement. They are from two different companies, so they do feel different but fit good. Did I use different and measurement enough. Hope this helps.

Go to a local shop and try some on they have different comfort levels and it should be snug, but not brain squeezing.

We did have him try on a few yesterday and it seemed like the Mediums were a little tight ( thought i was going to pull his head off with the Helmit) and thae large was a little bit bigger and loose fitting it seemed ...
I would rather purchase on off like because lets face it everything is a little less expensive...but not know the size that could affect how it fits...
if i could find a name brand in the store and size him to that , then see if i could order it online that i think would be the best option

Go to a shop and try some name brands on.

Then go online and buy that brand. Some places, like Rocky Mountain have a good return policy where they will pay for the return and reship the right size. If you're comfortable with the size fit and what to save more money, there's always ebay.

Just make sure it's DOT and Schnell approved.

Hi,
We have a very large selection on line. If you know the size you need, you should check out our web site. All helmets are DOT approved.
I did an article on Wikihow about safety, another consideration is that the forehead should be covered, chin strap taught. Fit is very essential for the safety of the rider, as a Mom I am thrilled you recognize the importance of safety gear!
Here is a link to our site. Good luck with your search.
