[UPDATE!!!]Help Me Decide On A New Machine!
#1
ok.
I am 14, and i have been riding a suzuki ozark 250 for about 3 years.
I have been riding since I was 7. And I am a pretty big guy (bout 6 ft. 230 lbs.)
So I am pretty sure I could handle most quads.
I do not know if i want a sport or utility.
I will be primarily be riding in mud, and creek beds with sand and water in them.
I am thinking that I need a ute, but if I can get away with a good sporty quad, that would be good. because they are usually cheaper.
I was thinking about maybe a DS650 if I go for a sport. Or a polaris sportsman.(I don't know what cc.) if I go for a ute.
But I am open to any recommendations. (excluding hondas)
Price range is probably $7,000 MAX
[UPDATE]: Today my mom and i went to our Polaris dealer, and looked around, and I was very impressed. The salesman that came up to us was very helpful, and very knowledgeable. We looked at the sportsman 500 EFI. The salesperson said that i could get around $2,000 for my old quad. The price on the 500 that we looked at (the EFI one) was about $6,300. Now I just have to convince my dad....
they also had a 50th anniversary 700r there for $4,000.

Hey, I'm 14 also, and I've been doing some thinking about what kind of ATV I want next. I'm about 6 feet, and about 180 pounds.
I say since you like sports ATVs (like me) and will be doing some real off roading (like me also) then you should go with a "hybrid" ATV.
There are only 2 options, the Yamaha Wolverine 450 and the Can-am Renegade (500 or 800). The Renegade 800 is out of your price range, but between the Wolverine and the Renegade 500, the Renegade IMO is the much better machine. With a V-Twin engine, it makes much more power, and has a smoother engine. If you look at the brochure for the Renegade, you will see that the 500 engine makes much more power than the Yamaha 450 engine.
Also, the Can-Am has a standard 3-year warranty.
I think I'm gonna get a Renegade for my next ATV, and I hope that you do to! lol

It sounds like you need a 4x4. There are lots of good ones out there. I personally won't buy a Can-Am until they fix the frame problem, but if you don't hit any rocks or stumps it should be okay. I think there are better choices but we all have our own opinions. Nobody knows whats best for you.
First you need to figure out what things you can't do without. For me it's 4x4, IRS, and EFI. After you figure out what you need, you have to decide what you want and see which models fit your requirements. It's also important to feel comfortable on it. Not everyone wants a 4-wheeled Lay-Z-Boy but mine feels good when I ride 8-12 hours a day.

ok, I need 4x4. I realize that now.
i do not know what IRS or EFI is like, because i have never ridden a bike with either one.
I have been looking at the grizzly 660.
would I be able to get one of these new within my price range?
How do the sportsman 500 and the grizzly 660 line up?

EFI is Electronic Fuel Injection (standard on the Renegade)
IRS is Independent Rear Suspension (I think) which is also standard on the Renegade.
I don't get why you aren't looking at the Renegade. Can-Am makes the most powerful engines in the business. Plus they have lots of other great features that make them a great trail machine. The Renegade also lets you keep some of the sports aspect.

What frame problems? You mean the ones on the 05 or 06 Outlanders that are now fixed? Not trying to start a flame war just curious.

Can-Am owners on other forums are complaining about the frames getting dented and bending or buckling. One guy said he totaled his out when he hit something at 10 mph. I think it was a tree, but I've hit trees faster than that with no damage at all except to the tree. I'm not a flamer and don't believe everything I hear, but when it's the owners saying there's a problem I believe them. One of them was warning people not to buy one until Can-Am fixes the problem. According to Can-Am's website they put a CENTER skid plate on the Outlander for '09, which I guess leaves 2/3 of the frame unprotected. I haven't seen an '09 so I don't know.
But people are saying the Renegades are breaking frames too and they haven't come up with a fix for it. If they fix the frame problems they'll be great quads, but a lot of them that only a year or two old have problems. I haven't been by the nearest Can-Am dealer in a few years but if they're still there I can ask them about it. IF I can get somebody to wait on me next time. They acted like they didn't want my business before.

I've also read about issues like that, but there are also alot of guys out there that will re-post in about a month or so about how their warranty solved the problem and everything was O.K. Well I agree that it is not something that you want to be thinking about when you're out on the trail, from what I understand for the 07 and up models had the "fixed" frame that was less prone to bending and buckling and whatever.
The next time I'm at my dealer will probably be when I'm getting a Renegade, or when the Outtie is in for service, so I'll see what he says aobut the number of problems that he has encountered.
Our Outtie has full aluminum skid plates, just to be on the safe side. They're not installed yet, but when I took a look under the quad before I agree that the majority of the quad is exposed (but it's the same with most stock quads). There are various plastic protector plates installed from the factory. We spend approximately $1300 just on the plates, but they give you peace of mind and really do protect the quad (once they're installed).
The new 09 800"R" get the cednter skid plate only (I think, if I'm not mistaken), not the lesser engined models. The same thing happens with the Renegade 800 X and DS450X, they get some of the skid plates pre-installed.
I'm just saying that I think - and I hope - that Can-Am has resolved the frame issues. I do know lots of happy Renegade owners, so although I don't have much personal experience with them, I can reccomend them because of having the Outtie and because of lots of happy customers.

Zellars94, I lol when I read Canadian144s explanation of EFI and EBS. I understood what you were saying, but I've goofed up before too. It's just funnier to see someone else do it.
