A 4x2 can go 90-95% of the places I go but the other 5-10% you're only going as far as a winch can pull you. Even if you have 4x4, If you don't have IRS you'll get stuck when your rear axle hangs up.

I rode a 2WD for over twenty years and was very happy with it, but I will never recommend that anyone buy a utility ATV without true 4WD and a winch. You will have much more freedom and enjoy riding more without having to be so careful about where you ride or getting stuck on a log or in the mud. Yes, they are more expensive, but worth every penny.

I hear that - I went on a ride alone yesterday on my 20 yr old 2x4 250 and I went around every single mud hole. If I'm riding with someone that's a great safety net, but alone without 4x4 and you can't take any chances.

mrk874,
You may already know this, but way before anyone had 4WD or winches, we carried a length of rope and if you got stuck, you wrapped it around your rear axle and used it as a winch to go forward or backward; primitive, but worked in a pinch. Now I only ride my 2x4 with someone or where I know I can't possibly get stuck; otherwise I take my 4x4.
