The scrambler 400 which is faster than the 500 was made from 1995-2002,tops out at about 65mph the wolverine tops at 53.Scrammie 400's are also 2 strokes don't know if that'll effect your decsion, there oil injected no pre mix and pre 2000 models had a fox rear shock send a pm if your interested about my machine.

I can't testify personally about performance in mud, but the Rancher 420 is a hot little machine! Being fuel injected, it rips right off the bottom. It is stable and has a low center of gravity, and handles as well as a lot of sport quads.
But in your price range, all you may be able to find is a used Rancher 350 (????). Not a bad machine either, but the 420 is better in every way.

Hmm well you definitly dont want a 2wd machine. A 4 wheel drive will go fast enough for your needs. Our old 2wd sport quad couldnt go through 1/10 of the things we put our 2008 kingquad 400 through. From the price range your looking at, if thinking about honda your getting back into the older 300 and 350 models that are always in 4x4 which you do not want. ALso hondas dont have diff lock, not even on any of the new models, so i would suggest you think carefully before buying a honda. Yamaha wolverines don't have diff lock but you can go in and out of 4wd. They wont go through as much mud as a true utility machine will but it would probably be good for you, and yes im 90% sure ive seen wolverines with 25 inch tires. Older wolverines like 2001 2002 ones like that go for around 3500 and if your lucky maybe even one newer. If possible i would choose a polaris scrambler over the wolverine tho. Chain drive in the back to resemble a sport quad, and shaft driven in the front. If you do want a utility and not a mixture of the two like a wolverine i would try and look for these quads. Polaris sportsmans, older models run pretty cheap. Older yamaha grizzlys/ kodiaks. Ive seen around year 2000 660 grizzlies selling for 3500$ as well. Also Suzuki eigers are pretty good priced, and you might find a good suzuki vinson or kingquad used too. Hope this helps
