Hi, my dad has the 800 Max XT Outlander, it's an AWESOME machine. Is the polaris an 08 or 09? If you could get an 09 Sportsman 800 for the price of the Outlander 650, I would jump to the Sportsman. Definitely a better deal. The Outlander will definitely do the job and you will have lots of fun on it, but if you had the choice between similar bikes, just one had a larger engine, the 800 would be the way to go.

And that was hard to say being a Can-Am guy. LOL

Both are good, incredibly tourquey machines. Both have similar towing, load ratings, and ground clearance. The Polaris X2 offers a dump box that can be quickly changed to a legal passenger seat. I think the Can Am offers the ability to take the passenger seat off and put on a dump box. Both good quads. I like the X2 a little better due to the storage box under the front rack. I have a ton of stuff in mine. I also like not having to decide which one I have on the quad. I can switch in under 10 seconds. Just my .02 worth.

Yep, two fine ATV's. It would be a hard choice. I love the Rotax V-Twin in the Outty... that's for sure! I've also heard that the Outty is the only quad that comes close to the Sportsman in ride quality. The only thing I don't like about the Outty is the Visco-lock front diff. I prefer the Polaris AWD. However, for plowing snow and yard work, that may not be an issue for you. I also love the ride on the Sportsman, and I've heard that the X2 rides even better (hard to believe) than the regular Sportsman. Both will have more than enough power to do what you want to do... and then some.

If you can, take both for at least a little ride, and see which one you like, and which one has the features you prefer. Also, if they throw in the 3 year warranty on the Outty, it would be hard to pass up.

Good luck with your decision.

And another thing, what was the price that you got quoted on each of them?

forget them both, get a mid size machine in the 400cc range with a low range. my opinion, a 650 or 800 is too much for a new rider.
