Default Looking for a beginner sport ATV

Hey all, I'm looking to get a beginner sport ATV, probably something that I ride for a year or two before moving to bigger and better models. I'm 6'2" and ~220lbs, and while I know how to operate a clutch in theory, it's been years since I've ridden a motorcycle, and I've never operated a manual ATV.

I've been looking at used 300EXs but my worry is that they'll be too small for me or I'll look like an idiot when I go to test drive one.

Any suggestions?

Also, how much money is usually needed to maintain an ATV? I'm trying to set up a budget for it + gear + transportation.

I would go for a 400 class machine at least for your size. I am 5'9" and 215, the 300 is a hoot, but they are pretty tame powerwise and generally not much cheaper than a 400. It would do for a year perhaps.

Maintenance is going to vary greatly between machine and rider. If you play in a lot of mud, you will be spending a lot more time replacing bearings(axle, wheel, and the oft forgotten shock bewrings for instance.) Otherwise with frequent chain cleaning and air filter maintenance, the costs shouldn't run more than a few hundred per year. Crash damages not included.

For gear, don't skimp on the helmet. Get decent goggles, boots, and gloves. Nerfbars are your feet and legs savior. Consider the cost of adding at least a cheap set.

I agree with Scooter86 that you'd be better off with a 400 than a 300. Any ATV is fun for awhile but the 300 would get boring.
