My budget is ~$3500 and I will be riding trails, in fields, on sand dunes, and in the mud but also on the road so I would like an ATV that also has a nice top speed.

I was leaning away from utility ATVs because they're so bulky and leaning more towards sports ATVs because of the speed and acceleration seem really nice compared to the utility ones. I was thinking of getting something like a '07 TRX 450R but I heard that racing quads can stall out when going at low speeds. I was also thinking of something like a TRX 400X but I would like for it to be able to haul *** on the road.

I'm also 6'3" and weigh 180 Lbs so would a 400 be too small?

If you don't ride in the mud very much and ride with friends that can pull you out get a sport quad. I've never had one but everybody says they're more fun.

 

A friend of mine just traded his TRX 450 R with a bunch of mods in for a new Polaris 450 Sportsman. He said, it took a bit to get used to the less hp, but his chiropactor, may be out of business. He said the fun was gone, riding the Honda, it was killing his back. Polaris bikes ride nice. Best thing you can do is drive one then compare with a utility ATV. I wouldn't think being 6' 3" would be a problem and 180 lbs is not very heavy. My friend is probably 6' and 200 lbs. I'm 250 lbs and ride 2 up with my 110 lb wife on my old Arctic Cat 500, plenty fast for me.

 

I don't have any friends with quads unfortunately, but I will be riding the dunes in Albany, GA over the summer

The mud here isn't really deep so I think I would be fine, my only concern is that I've heard racing quads can stall out a lot when going slow like on a trail, any thoughts on this?

 

I think my back should be fine, I've done worse and come out fine haha.

I was just thinking a 450R or something similar would be a good step for me because I like things that go fast and I've read around that it can hit ~60 on the highway. And i've heard riding in general is funner on a sports quad haha.

Do you think I should go bigger than a 400 or 450?

 

Raptor 700 would be good too. A coworker of mine bought one and loves it. Its plenty fast, probably in the 75 mph range or maybe even a little more.

 

The Raptor 700 is a good quad and I think it's physically larger and would fit a tall person better. I don't know what the prices are on used ones.

 

My coworker got a great deal on his 2013 Raptor 700 because a friend of his needed money, was about $3500. Typically you won't find one that new for that price but the Raptor 700 came out in 2006 I believe so there should be plenty of used ones out there in good shape for the $3500 budget you have set.

 

I think that since I'll be riding trails a lot and riding the dunes I'll go with a 700, I read the 450 is just better at acceleration but the 700 has a better top speed. If I can't find a 700 for a decent price I'll go with 450. Maybe a 400x.

 

If you can look at a 700/660 Raptor it is physically larger then most sport ATVs, chassis wise.
