Since he is not an experienced atv rider, I would not recommend a Raptor....he could easily get into trouble. The 400ex is way to light in the front end for a beginner (even more so than the Raptor) that trail rides....especially with 4x4 utility riders that love to climb steep stuff. What about one of the 500cc 4X4 sporty (called a sportsman I believe?) atv's? He is already familiar with the automatic and it will run almost as fast as a 400ex....he won't be on a mx course to take full advantage on the 400ex's handling anyway riding with utility atv's.

no , i mean he has only ridden some 4x4 stuff , like honda 4x4 utility's. he'll probably be riding with a 125 dirtbike , 300 ex , and only sometimes maybe 1 or 2 utility atv's. and he doesnt like automatics because he thinks its more fun to shift. **always influenced by the bigger brother** and well i dont really spend $5000 for a quad that a $3000 slightly used one could beat. oh and while im at it , is $3000 for a used 2000 yamaha banshee a good deal?? im pretty sure it is. but just checkin.

The banshee for 3,000 sounds like a good deal, but theck three thing 1. oil - make sure the oil is not burnt colored and has no metal shavings in it. 2. check spark plug - see if it's black and fouling out. 3. check air filter for dirt, dust and debris. If all these come back clean, then the bike has been well maintained. By it immediately. If these are in poor condition, then the bike has not been maintained very well and there may be hidden problems.

Scrambler....thats what I was trying to think of. I previously owned a 400ex, and when it was stock, it was just a tad faster than the 400cc sport polaris....I have been told the 500cc Scramber was as fast as the 400cc 2-stroker....not true?
Anyway, $3000 for a 2000 Banshee is a good deal if it's in good shape and has good compression.
