First consider how you will use your ATV. Will you be riding with others, if so what size and type do they ride. (some models may be
incompatible with others) Generally the sporty models have manual
clutch and shift with high performance engines, while utility models
or the newer sport/utility models have either auto clutches or fully
automatic transmissions, with a large range of engine sizes.
Sport models have chain drive (must be oiled and adjusted) and disc
brakes, while utility models have shaft drive and either disc or drum
brakes. You may choose water cooling or air cooling. 2WD or 4WD.
If you must travel to riding areas how will you transport your ATV?
Will it fit in your truck or trailer? (there getting larger each
year it seems) Will you have enough fuel range for long rides?
In general independent rear suspension gives a smoother ride and
better traction. while solid rear axles give better handling.
A 250cc ATV will take an adult almost anywhere. but a larger machine
will do it quicker and with less effort. If you are a large or tall
person you need a model that is physically large enough that you
will not be cramped. If you are new to offroading you may not know
who the good Dealers are (good luck here). While price is important
having a good dealer is a factor also. (Warranty work and service,
parts availability and accessories)
Shop wisely, good luck and safe riding.
