1995 POLARIS 400cc SPORT 2wd (PLEASE REPLY)
#1
I have a friend of mine who wants to sell me his four wheeler it is a 1995 polaris 400cc sport. I rode it this weekend and climbed a lot of hills, rode through mud, on trails, and along a creek bed. This four wheeler seemed really solid. He wants 1200 for it and I have an additional 2000 to put into it for any unseen repairs or mods that I may want to make to it. I dont know how much parts are for this model if they are expensive or not, I also do not know much about the polaris or if they are a good four wheeler or junk?? IS there anything I should know about them or problems they have. Any feedback or information would be greatly appreciated. I am possibly wanting to buy this in the next few days.
Thanks

This is a good machine you are considering. Check the swingarm bushings, chain and engine compression. The two stroke engine is easy and inexpensive to rebuild. If the machine is clean and in good shape....$1200 is not a bad price.

My friend has a 98 scrambler 400 4 x 4. I don't know how similar this is to the machine you are considering, though they look similar. His is a POS. We count on it breaking each time we ride. I don't want to bring you bad news and maybe this isn't. Just one data point, this may not be indicative of all of them. For one thing he is not a maintenance guru.

On older Polaris models, the rear chain had to be adjusted a lot to keep the tension just right, or aggressive jumping and racing will tend to break it. An after market chain tensioner will help a lot, this is one reason Polaris went to concentric drive, lined up the chain and swingarm better, and keeps the chain tension constant througout the full travel. Other than that, seems like a good price, and with a few mods, it should be a fun ride.

For the money its the best you can make'er into a u.s. made quad from hell it sound like you got the equity buy that thing up and find hotseats website for further encouragement I have the same year sport and the bad thing is you do have to be aware of your chain tention every ride you can take pretty big jumps with them but it will tend to lossen up your chan dont worry about it. their good quads especialy when starting out

J If you do go with this mach.you will have to do repairs and get some goodies. The parts for polaris quads do cost more than parts for other quads. Some parts are super hard to get .I got a 400explorer used that had a lot of problems and needed a lot of new parts. The guy I talked to was Rick Retter. This guy is great. He will talk to you like a real person not like a sellsman.Tell him your prob., or needs and he'll hock you up with the good stuff. (rittercycle.com) I hope you have better luck with your quad than l did. ------------------400explorer 500scram. 250ex
