Default kodiak 400, 450 or king quad

hi,

a local dealer has an 03 kodiak 400 with 60 miles for $4600, he also has a new king quad 300 for $4299. of course he has plenty of the kodiak 450's too. which of these would be the best value for tight woods riding?

thanks

I own a King Quad and have not ridden a Kodiak so I will only give you my opinion on the King. I really like this quad. It's a snotty little beast that has done very well for me in the woods both working and playing. I have skidded trees out in tight woods with ease and it trails rides fairly nice. With the super low locking diff. this thing climbs through just about anything. I use to say it could climb through anything(within reason) but I the other day I got the darn thing good and stuck. One thing, it has a very short suspension travel so that could be a factor to consider. I also plow and mow with this quad. Other then that it's a great quad and I would recommend it

Get the kodiak, It is a strong machine with a well known setup, being liquid cooled and fully auto. Also check out lakehillmotors.com in Corinth MS, the can sell you an 03 new out the door for I think $4499.00 frog skins. They beat everyones price here in Oklahoma.

That sounds like to much for a kodiak 400. You should be able to buy a new one for that price. The kodiak is an automatic compared to the 5 speed on a king quad. The king quad with all of its gearing options and locking diff would probably make a better utility quad than the kodiak. The kodiak has an auto transmission, full floorboards, and a more powerful engine. In my opinion it is a more fun machine for trail riding and is still capable of light utility work if needed. My father has an 02 king quad and enjoys it but when the pace picks up the heavier weight, smaller engine and limited suspension travel makes it difficult to keep up.

that was his sticker price, I would imagine he would come down some. another dealer here had the 400 for 5400, and the 450 for over 6k!

what would be a good price on the 450?

btw, the used 400 is the camo model which sells for more

My Kodiak 400 is nice, auto tranny even nicer. 4500-4600 are good prices for the 2003. When I bought mine in Dec of 03, right around 4700.

It really depends on how you're going to use the quad. The Kodiaks are good quads and are on the sport ute side. Is the King Quad a new 2002 or 2003? Is it just leftover from the sport ute rush of 2002/2003? There are two short comings of the King. 280cc to 599lb ratio and the 3.3"front, 3.7"back suspension. ( The larger balloon tires help a little. ) The King is a utility tank. One reason it is so heavy is because it's made like a tank. Newer quads are getting more plastic to keep the weight down. The King Quad has alot of things that other quads wish they had. The King has IRS, 15 forward gear choices, locking diff., full belly protection, little lower stance but good ground clearance. It used to retail for $5499.00 new. The Kodiak 450 is decent and has locking diff. but also cost alot more new. If you want a strong ute then I'd say to get a King Quad. It wouldn't hurt to try to get them down on the price more if it's a new leftover. If you want to drive faster on the trails then go with one of the Kodiaks.
