I need help convincing my father to buy me an atv. He said that he would buy me an atv if they didn't tear up the ground so much. Since i live on a small farm (actually 102 acres)i can see his concern. However, since i live on a farm i want to get a 4x4. It's not like i'm gonna get a 20 foot roost off of a 4wd utility quad. Can any of you guys help me to convince my dad? All help is appreciated.

The way I convinced my dad (way back when) was by bringing one of my friends over that had one. After showing him how hard the thing could work he softened up enough to let me buy one. He wouldnt buy it for me but after a very short time I had to fight with him to get him off of it. Needless to say he has owned a few since then and still rides sometimes with me still and he is 75 years old. I dont know how old you are but dont give up. Show him the benefits of it and maybe talk him into at least helping you out with the cost.

Good Luck!

GroundPounder500:
Not sure what you want it for, but if you are looking for a good utility 4x4, I would suggest the Arctic Cat 500, Polaris 500 or Honda 450 s/es. As you can see, I bought the AC 500 Auto. It has the highest rack capacities of any atv on the market, and one of the highest towing capacities. BTW-it's only rated at towing around 1100 lbs., but I towed my '91 Chev Suburban down the street the other day, just to see if it could do it, and it was no problem! And, I just liked it a lot better, and it fit me better, so I bought it-actually two of them.

As for convincing your dad, well, that shouldn't be too difficult once he sees what they are capable of. Actually, I just had the same problem. I had been planning on buying a atv for quite some time, but my dad tried to talk me out of it, and suggested I wait to buy a new truck first. Well, after I showed him the AC brochure, as well as the Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, etc., he actually went out to a local dealer and looked at them himself. He asked what I was going to buy, and said that when I decided to buy mine, he wanted one too, so he gave me a check for his, told me to pick him up one too.

As for your Dad, they are great for around a farm. Hook up a trailer to the back, and you are now able to drive all over the farm, hauling fence mending materials, or feed, tools, etc., without the extra gas cost of that gas guzzling F-250 or whatever farm truck you use. For small garden plots, you can get all kinds of tractor implements only on a smaller scale. Rear blades, plows, discs, rakes, etc., they've got it all. Throw a snow plow on the front, not only can you plow snow, but also clean stalls, grade your drive, move dirt, gravel, etc.

As for tearing up the ground, well, I have to be honest, yes they will do that, but only if you physically make them do it. Go easy on the throttle, and you won't even be able to tell you were even there. Also, 4x4 atv's can take you to that favorite hunting or fishing spot much faster than on foot, and even allow you to explore to find a new "favorite" spot. Also, they are able to pack that deer or elk out much easier than by hand, just throw it on the racks, drive on back to the house. And, with a good winch on the front, you are completely unstoppable!

Well, sorry about the length, but hope this helps! Good luck with your quest for a new utility quad. Maybe you can do a few extra chores around the house or something to help convince him you are serious about it.

Bill:
Uh? You got me on that one!!! Heh Heh Heh. Good point.

Hey Ground Pounder, if I may list one more way to help convince your dad to let you buy a quad, I would have to ask if you might consider a name change. Somehow "Ground Pounder" just sounds a little like tearing up the place-Your Dad's place! He might not find that very humerous. Heh Heh Heh.

Anyway, good luck to you!

cowboy said it best you just need a way to prove how useful they are,and you will proably have to buy one for him because he will always be on yours if not. My dad used to think that 4wd trucks were useless said that if you couldnt get there in 2wd you didnt need to be there that was 15yrs ago and he now has his 5th 4wd truck his first new one though,so just use common sense dont make him mad and he will come around.
Good luck

I've got the same problem with my mom. I work so I could make the payments, but she still wont let me. She wont let me bull ride either though. This weekend my friend is bringing his over and im hopin she will see that they're not as dangerous as she thinks and that I can make the payments on it. Im thinkin about gettin a Wolverine since ill be mud ridin and racin and just a little bit of utility. If I ever get her convinced, I'll let you know how I got her to let me... only thing she dont know is that i go 4 wheelin sometimes with my friends. Oh and another thing... never dip while you're ridin... you'll hit that big bump and itll go right down your throat...

#1- get a job
#2- buy a helmet. (if you don't think you need a helmet read "bad, bad wreck"
#3- get the helmet shipped to you by UPS so everyone in the house knows you've got it.
#4- keep the helmet in a place where everyone in the house sees it regularly. If you ride with friends now, it should be seen on your head!
#5- let everyone know that "one day when I get an ATV I want to be safe riding it"
#6- after you buy the helmet and prove to everyone in the house that it is the second most sacred object in the house (next to grampas ashes)you must then wait until your parents go out of town for the weekend or something and THEN...
#7- YOU go to the dealer and pay cash for your OWN ATV!
If you do not understand this message in its entirety you are...
A- too young to get an ATV
B- too stupid to get an ATV
or
C- all of the above.

hope the advice works

Very well said RUNNVS1 I hope that if he is riding with his friends that they are wearing helmets, but you would think with most people wearing them on bycycles that it would be a no brainer on quads.
