fuel sending unit on a 2008 outlander 800???

fuel sending unit on a 2008 outlander 800???
My fuel gage isn't working - It reads empty even when it's full. The fuel bars illuminate when I turn the bike on, which I guess would indicate the gage is working, but then it just starts blinking indicating an empty tank with no bars even though the tank is full.
I downloaded the 500 page shop manual and there's nothing in it that mentions a sender unit. Any one have any clue if there is one- or how to trouble shoot this issue?
Everything else is working fine on the gage...

Since no "experts" had any clue or advice I'll give you an update-
The unit was defective and was replaced by the dealer under warranty.
The dealer said he's done a few outtys with the same issue.
