Is it leaking from around the gasket of the bowl, from the tubes that come off of the side of the carb, or the very bottom of the bowl? Each has a different reason why it might leak.
If it's the bottom of the bowl, that is the drain for the bowl. The screw for the drain is either corroded, or not tight enough. I plugged mine up with a short piece of rubber hose that has a nail in it to completely seal it up.

maybe the carbs on the 2000 were different? When I pulled the carb apart, I do not see how the drain at the bottom could also act as an overflow.

nope there the same 99% of carbs are this way ...
there is two holes for fuel to flow out ,but both holes drain out the same nipple on the bottom. one controled by the drain screw and the other open port is down that brass tube. when fuel goes to high from a stuck or leaky float it will go over the brass tube and out the bottom nipple..... never plug that tube. the fuel will then go directly into the motor and lock it up or fill the oil full of fuel ... bad deal .....

Oh man, I am an idiot! I can't believe I did not figure that out when taking the bowl off. For all the times I read posts where people just spew incorrect knowledge and I get upset, I rally hate joining that group...
I know it's differrent for every person, but it appears my brain started to fade at age 41. It's all downhill from here....
