Newbie Questions

OK guys I know I am a newbie so I dont mind asking these dumb questions. First on my 2001 DS650 I just got all the front plastics off to replace the headlight and noticed that it is completly blown out and there is this little hole just to the side of where the headlight goes in, what goes in there? Second, how do you guys check the oil in these things? I just opened the oil container on the front and there are no lines on the dipstick and if the oil is supposed to be between the two ridges then why is my oil almost to the top of the container and not back down in the motor? The light doesnt come on unless I just turn the ignition on so I know that bulb is good. Thanks in advance for the help.

Well I can't help you with the headlight thing other than to tell you the bulb is a standard Automotive bulb you can get for around $7.00 at any Auto parts store. The oil is suppose to be between the lines, if it's full like you say, you got too much in there. It hold about .8 Gals of oil if you completely drain it.

Well the problem I fear is that it is letting moisture in and causing the bulb to blow. The H4 bulb cannot have ANY moisture on it (even the oil on your fingertip) or it will blow. So that being said do I leave it just wide open so condensation can build up in there?

When I first got my DS I got some sand in the headlight after a dune trip. I decided to plug the hole. Dont do it. It fills mith moisture even faster and blows the bulb. Now i just put a piece of tape over it when I wash it. Also Id drain the oil and start over. Sounds like way to much. I heard that can blow out some seals on your motor if you over fill. There was a good thread on here about oil changes not to long ago(good tips) DONT USE SYNTHETIC

ok, so I will leave the hole alone but on the oil, what kind do you guys reccomend and how many quarts do I need? Also as far as the oil filter goes, is there not a cross reference part number so I can just go to the local parts store and get one for a motorcycle or do I just need to stick with the Bombardier brand? also as far as the oil change goes, I just warm the bike up them drain all the oil in the front tank by pulling the hose then drain the motor using the drain plug down under it, take old filter off, prime the bike using the screw right next to the filter then throw the new filter on and we are done right?
