Well,
I think it gets worse and need its own topic

When i took the valve cover off to set the crank at TDC, I alinged the cams then pulled the plug to insert my crank locking pin. Well, the notch was not there, it was the smooth crank. I rotated the tires until I found the notch. Then I looked at the cams and they were NOT alinged any more
I know they were alinged when I last closed the engine as I rode it fro 500 miles or so.
With the TDC bolt in place the exhaust cam was lifted about 2-3 teeth from the center, the intake was 2-3 teeth below the center, yet the crank was at TDC!!
I figure what happend was when the cam struck the loose stud and it jamed it up against the top of the head it stalled the cam and timing chain, yet the motor continuted to turn,
The motor does run as I started it after it killed. The noise I heard REALLY sounded like the piston hitting the valves as if the timing was off.
So, now the cams are shot and probably the piston too. I am assuming the chain connects to the crank shaft. So does that mean I blew the crank also? ( no pun intended )
I am still able to turn the motor by the wheeles and it does run with the wrong timing??
I need to pull the head to see if the piston is crap now but this timing thing really concerns me..
What do you thinkg???

for some reason the timing chain detached and it skipped timing. so more than likely the piston will need to be replaced from hitting the valves. and as far as the crank it should be fine, but if the piston did hit the valves i would split the cases and check for debris just to be on the safe side. there are a couple of things that could of caused the timing chain to jump, either a loose chain from a failed chain tensioner or the chain guides in the lower part of the head could be damaged or worn. So definetly tear the engine apart straight down to the crank just to be sure. and also you said that the cams were gone, how did they look? good luck just post if you need any help with disassembling the engine.

o and one more thing don't start the engine again until you flush out the crank and check the piston because further damage can occur.

Sounds like your timing chain jumped, the tensioner my have collapsed. Get the RWR timing chain tensioner. If it still runs your valves may be OK. I would not run it anymore until you reset the cam marks.

this has happened on several bikes, I've read quite a few posts on it over the past.
the cam chain tensioner is hydraulic, controlled by oil pressure, and if it fails then the chain can jump causing what you got. new tensioner is cheap, and RW also has a new manual adjust tensioner that does not use hydraulics if you wanna go that route.
I would wanna pull the head to inspect, if you need new valves might as well go stainless and replace also replace valve seals while you're at it. you sure the cams are trash? 3 teeth isn't much, they may be okay. I doubt there is any bottom end damage, and you can inspect the sprocket on the crank without splitting cases.

look at thk http://www.pressenter.com/~gvogt/cam_out.JPG
I think you will agree on the cams
The tensioner is completly solid, no movement at all...
Ok, I will pull the head and check the bottom of the head..

MudStud, when i had my first stage three done, we ran it for about 10 minutes and all the sudden i heard a loud clanking noise...luckily it was in front of the mechanics shop, i went and got them, and they pulled out the cam tensioner and replaced it and everything was perfect no noises! try to drain the bottom oil plug and look for brass particals just to eleminate the failure of crank....if no brass debri, you might be able to focus on top end

from the picture i saw cams are definetly trashed. after seeing that picture i would definetly pull the head and check the piston. also there are probably going to be some pieces from the cam and the piston in the cases so you better split them if possible and clean it out. also once you pull the head could you please take a picture of the piston from different views and post it on this forum? i would like to see it. thanks

Ok, here is what I plan on doing

New cams A1/A2 433/267 and 406/278
New piston 11:5 forged
2 stage springs
NEW CAM TENSIONER!!!

Just going to do do the dang stage 2 with staggerd cams

I will take picutres as I rip it down.

I will do the porting later as it gets costly!!! that and I am only running the TM42 carb..
Any recomendations??
