ds baja or a yfz 450
#1
which one should i get the yfz 450 or the baja. i bet i know what everyone will say in this but may as well ask so which one is for me. i am around 6 foot and around 250 and like to go fast everywhere and sometimes i need power to do that. i have been thinking about a baja for a while but i saw the new yami at the Cinders in flagstaff, az and it hauled. he went up hills with ease and it was fast too so now i dont know. i saw a baja too and it went up hills too but i think the yfz was faster but i dont know. so i need opinions. thanks

rider size is huge on hills, the ds comes geared for flat land racing gear it down and it climbs great and it fits bigger riders the best that i have seen. i sew the 450 seems a little small like a great mx quad.

My advice is don't listen to anyone! Ride them yourself when available. The media is going to be paid to talk up the new 450, it's there job, so beware. I seen the same thing a year ago with the Z400, good bike know dought but not as good as the writers would lead you to believe, a 400 EX can still hold their own to the Z. The DS was built for the the Big Guys but smaller bikes can be fun for awhile. Ride them and I mean ride them hard to get a feel, price them if that's a factor(I think the 450 is way over priced) Be causous of first year bikes(look at the 01' Raptor) read the comments on the the Yamaha site about 1st year tranny problems and how well the warrenty was.
Oh ya, Don't listen to me, I'm a DS guy!!!!!! And I Like it

dunetic- i bought a 2003 baja about three weeks ago and i wish i would have bought one sooner because it is a great quad especially for a bigger rider.my baja is totally stock and i have already had a chance to race uphill on sand against a couple of stock raptors and my wifes 440 ex and i beat both of them and although it wasnt by much that is very good performance considering that i am 6'4" and 260 lbs.i have a raptor and a baja so i am not giving you a biased opinion as far as bombardier against yamaha .one of the strongest points of the baja is the stock suspension both front and rear and they are more than most people could ever use.i was going to put aftermarket shocks on the front of my baja until i tried jumping it off some 3 to 4 foot sand ledges and it did very well with the stock shocks so i will stay with them.ihavent seen the new yamaha yet but from what the specs say it would seem to be pretty cramped for a long day of trail riding where you would be doing a lot of sitting down but that is just an opinion since i have not sat on one yet.i would also add that a first year machine from yamaha may not be a good idea considering the problems with the raptor and yamahas denial of the problems.this is probably way more than you wanted to hear but since i own the baja and i am very happy with it maybe this information will help you.

I've been going through the same thoughts myself.. on this board. My string was "DS650 Baha or Raptor".... although I was also looking at the YFZ450.. Check out the responses I got .. maybe they will help.
As far as my opinion, now that I have received a lot of input from others, is that we both need to try both of them out. I sat on a "SOLD" YFZ 450 last week. It was the first one that the local shop got in. I'm 6Ft 195 and I was concerned about the small size of this quad. If I'm racing on a track, maybe the small size is the way to go.. but I'm more of a trail rat, who will race out there as well as tour with the family. With those needs in mind, I'm leaning towards the 2004 DS Baha with the X Package, that I'm told gives a little more in the suspension area.
X Package or not.. this just seems to be more in line with my needs, as well as being more in line with my 2 Outlander 400's that I already have and very much enjoy. We don't have Dunes in Wisconsin, but we have a lot of great trails through the woods and from county to county.
It's a tough choice, but I'm getting closer.... I think ... to my answer. Best of luck with your journey.

For your size the DS is the only choice I am afraid.
One of my friends has a YFZ450 and it is a bit small for me (6'2" 220 lbs.)
I think the YFZ will be a great track quad and could be modified to be a great hill shooter (from what I have heard.) The weight and power ratio are great.
