Alone in the middle of nowhere, DS won't run...

Yea, so I was driving on fire roads out in the pickers. I was riding W.O.T. in 5th when suddenly I just lose power and the engine dies...I coast to a stop....I was like..whoa.
I let it cool for a sec, and try to start it, it would turn, begin to fire, then stall again. After many tries with the choke, everything, even took out both plugs to see if I had some wet-fouling going on...but nope...everything seemed fine. Tried again a few times...and started pushing.
And pushing I f@#king did...over 2 miles of pushing that big 500 lb. beast on wheels. When I finally got to the end of that road, I was on a service road parallel to a highway. I tried to start it again, and after a few cranks, it started with the choke on....but died as soon as I closed the choke. Waited 10 minutes and tried again, this time I didn't let it idle, took off the choke, slammed on the gas and popped the clutch...
Got to where I cross the highways, and it stalled again...Started up and finally got to my house...
The thing that pisses me off the most, is that I drive into my driveway, let go of the gas, and she idles fine. Even let it idle for like 3 minutes without a hitch. Then I go for a little drive in the field next to my house...and everything seems fine, although I didn't rev it too much.
WTF caused this...and what can I do to stop it from happening again.
Thanks
Jeff
note : I run the 45 carb, with a 150 main, 40 pilot and 96 mikuni needle on 2nd slot from top.

I bet a dollar, yes a dollar that a SMALL piece of dirt or crap went through your fuel line and got stuck in your carb and passed through. No big deal, put on a fuel filter if it bothers you. Run it around a little and if it runs fine that was for sure your prob. like i said buy a fuel filter for like 50 cents and your good to go.

i landed a jump at the dunes once and my bike died and would only idle.. what happened was the assemble at the top of the carb.. the plastic piece that holds the needle down and spring... that peice came off..i must of not snapped it in all the way when i rejeted it... check that dealybob...

either you were getting no gas or no spark for a while there - cloggage like pushin says, or maybe even a kink in the tank breather not letting gas flow out of the tank, or a bad elec connection somewhere which is more unlikely than a fuel issue.
funny thing I had happen - I recently bought the trailtech big bar riser kit, it has a hole in the middle for tank breather tube, and its the smae size as the breather so it fits snug - well the steering stem is welded at the bottom making it pretty much sealed up, and after a while of riding I was starving for gas and wouldn't start because the tank couldn't breathe!
Oh, and fuel filter I'll not be without. Got an aluminum one with cleanable stone element from AutoZone for $6, red anodized to boot. commonly, debris from the tank will cause you to flood from the float valve sticking open, but jets can clog too from stuff that passes.

bummer, I had that happen too. I stalled out in the middle of freakin no where. After checkin all the basics, I checked to see if i had fuel coming out of the tank......notta...... so i blew into the fuel hose and presto ...mouth full of gas. When I made it home , I took the fuel valve off the tank and cleaned it out. end of prob. whew...
