I think its just a secondary filter...the main filter and magnent on the drain should catch most everything, but its there just in case.

It is a good thing you bumped this. Lots of new members lately, and they need to know!

Is it really worth having? Why not remove it? I am not suggesting removal. Just curious what makes us take the risk of it clogging?

Bigger, do you know whether it is really important to have?

well think about it this way. If there is enough crap in some peoples to CLOG it, do you want that crap floating around in your engine? Granted the filter and magnet should catch most of it, but I would still rather have it and clean it, then not have one at all.

all hydraulic pumps, regardless of application, must have a filter on their inlet side to avoid bringing foreign matter into the tight tolerance fit of their gears that produce the pressure. any debris that you drop into the tank when checking the oil level or filling must be prevented from reaching the oil supply pump.

on the same note, their is also a screen in the crankcase to filter the inlet side of the return oil pump of any debris produced inside the motor, such as clutch fibers or metal shards from bearings and bushings. but this filter is only accessable by splitting the crankcase.

I have to say, although I read A LOT about many people finding debris on the tank screen, I personally have never found anything of any significance at all on my tank screen in 5 years and many many hundreds of hours of motor time. I do not have an expanation to why some do and some don't, but the bottom line is yes leave the screen intact, and inspect it routinely.

And before reassembly, be sure to clean the threads of the old thread sealer, both in the hole and on the plug, and apply fresh teflon pipe dope or tape each time.

any dry sump motor with an external oil tank should have a screen, not saying they all do but they should.
I don't know if the Outy is a dry sump or not. If you have an oil tank then it is, so it prolly has a screen. if there is no tank and you fill the oil at the crankcase, then you're wetsump.

Same question as a few posts above.....

Is this screen only in the DS650? Can anyone tell me if there's one hidden somewhere on my 400 Outty? If so, where? How do you get to it?

I don't see any mention of it in the owners manual, but it looks like they left it out of the DS manual too from what you guys are saying.
