Default Missing in 2nd

Just got back from a weekend trip to the dunes where a friend of mine developed a problem on his DS. It started missing in second gear when he got on the power. Odd thing is it only does it in 2nd. Another friend of ours rode it and said it seemed like it was loosing spark but Cade said it used to grind going into second so I was thinking maybe he rounded some teeth. Any ideas? Suggestions on what to check? Thanks in advance.

I know Eaglecollector was having the same problem at Pizmo a couple of weeks ago. I think it is missing teeth on second gear.

If the damage to second gear has torn up metal parts, then it would be assumed that metal chunks & flakes etc. are floating around in the oil, to some extent. Since the oil is shared between the engine and trans, that does not bode well. I think it would be wise to see what the magnet on the oil drain plug tells you, check all of the screens & filters and then check the trans. It would suck to have a 'minor' problem turn into an 'everything-is-screwed' kinda deal. I think it would be wise to not ride it until it is fixed.

It could be caused from bent shifting forks - then everything else goes to wack after that.

you said it is missing, is it the engine or is it tranny wouldn't it surge if teeth were missing as if the engine was losing load and surge higher?

But if it were the engine, it should do it at a certain RPM range, or vibration or something that would happen in ever gear. I have a feeling the 'in 2nd' only is why the thread went transmission. If he changes the oil and checks that first it is easy and will give an idea of what may or may not be going on.
