lidless w/ stock intake boot or carb mount? (45mm)
I have had no significant difference in the bottom end between the two methods, but like Ironrod and ANN I did experience a loss in top re-installing the boot. I lost about 300rpms on top - from 9500 down to 9200 for peak rev in 5th gear, around 3 or 4mph wide open in fifth, but was unsure if it was due to improper jetting.
And I did just witness the oscilation Mark speaks of in the garage!

Well, I used to run the clamp on with the TM42 I had and I ran it with the boot.. I actually liked the boot better. Seemed more lively if you will.. I could not tell the top end that much. I guess I never really cared. Now with the Lectron 46 MisterHP said he lost HP and was not able to properly tune the carb for a clamp on.. This came when I asked him to set mine up for a clamp on.. He had never done it like that.. Long story short. I have the airboot and a lidless box and it runs great!!! He said he actually prefered NO box but just the boot to correct airflow and speed it up.

The old trick to stop the intake boot from collapsing is to run hose clamps around every other rib. I've tried the filter both ways and can't feel any difference although the clamp on makes more noise. The best set up would probably be a short tube off the carb to keep the filter from rubbing the seat with a new K&N filter with the pleats on the end and sides for maximum flow.

Next time you try the stock intake boot put the clamps on like mysteryeid said and then start richening the carb. I have found when the carb mount goes on I have to lean it out big time to make it run. Throttle responce is sluggish with the carb mount also, with a Lectron that is. I would think other carbs would be the same but maybe not.

Bombardier has actually addressed the airbox tube collapsing issue to an extent. On my 2003 Baja I noticed that the ribs on the tube were much larger than what I saw on my 2001. You might take a look at one of the newer model tubes & see if you notice the same thing. My 2003 Baja is still 100% stock power wise, so I've not bothered testing anything.
There are times when I really like having my DS setup stock or with just the slip on - I never have any downtime except for regular maintenance.

I still have the stock rev box until I pick up the Vortex. So at that, I can hit 7900 RPM with the lid off using the stock air filter. I just started my own company doing PC support & things are going well enough to live, but not yet enough 'gravy' to pour onto my DS' so to speak.
