According to Ron Wood at Ron Wood racing, You can add a K&N filter and not need to rejett your quad. He said that DS's are jetted rich from the factory and could use a free flowing filter to lean it up a bit. Ron also said that it applies only to using stock carb and pipe. A new pipe requires new jets. Ron also said all of his testing and results are done keeping the air box lid on.

You can order the kit through a dealer who can get it through Parts Unlimted. I don't understand why my bike's headpipes turn red and it pops through the exhaust under decel, if it's rich from the factory??? Seems to me, if anything, it is too lean by those symptoms. Runs fine though. They didn't change the jetting for '04 by chance?

Cop- you are right on. I run a K&N and a modified exhaust tip and changed from the stock 165 main to a 170. It runs great.

uthach- My header glowed red too when it was stock. After reading several posts on this board, I went in to talk to Gary at TVI about it. He said that my DS was running rich, not lean. I said "Yeah, but what about the glowing header?". He said that if my engine was running lean, the head would be hot, not the header. The header is glowing because of the unburned gas in the exhaust. At least that is my understanding. Given the fact that my header no longer glows after the mods I mentioned, it looks like he was correct.

I haven't yet cut the spring on the throttle, but I'm gonna before going out again.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like that could make sense. That would also explain why it seemed a little worse after my filter got dirty. Well I have a jet kit and K & N coming and a Yosh slip-on. We'll see what happens then.
