Default going to stage 2 yee-haw

i should be recieving my piston, cams, springs tomorrow!!!i'm fairly mechanically inclined....i've worked on a bunch of 2 strokes but this will be my first 4 stroke to open up!fun fun. i just wanted to know are there any tips, tricks,do's or don'ts?!but to change the subject i ride with a boy that has a 2000, we both have stage 1. i can out run him 8 times out of 10.pretty close. he got a local machine shop to port & polish his head and shave it, have no idea what compression he's up to now. he outs run me now in short race by 2 lengths, long race by 5 or more. he spent $350.00 and i just spent $1000.00 with Ron Wood. i better be able to out run him.LOLany tips or links would be appreciated. thanks

I jumped to the stage 2 early this spring also. Once I got the head and cylinder off, I thought to myself, Geeze, I only want to do this one time, so, I sent the head out for porting. I sent it to alba, but they sent it to Samcoe without my knowing. They did a fine job with it, but it is only a mild porting job. IMO. Anyway, what Im getting at is this, if you can swing it, get the porting done. Its already apart, you already purchased gaskets, and I guarantee, you will have the fever just like I have after seeing how much more power you have. It is short lived though, because you will immediately want more. At least I cant get enough. That is why my motor will be going to Gary at TVI this fall. Anyway, good luck with the mods. You will find the 4 stroke motor is not as intimidating as you think. Besides, this forum is a great place to get answers.

A Stage Two kit for $1000??
Isn't that cheap?! I thought they were high dollar?!

AND....
Do you guys run pump 87 octane on the ported and stage two kits???
or something with more ooomf like 92 or greater?!

I'd be interested to know since I ride in Mex (low octane fuels, like 81 octane).... and am looking for a little more out of the DS, but don't want to worry. I'm leaning to leave it stock.... but it's a big heavy quad, and any perf. I can get will help.
