Definetly call Bombardier and get a case started. The jury is still out on this, they have our motor, hopefully this will be resolved soon. Driveline? Starter Bendix? We'll see....

Hello fellow Outlander owners. I have been reading alot of posts concerning the noises made from the Outlander. I bought mine the first Friday of Sept. I didn't notice any noises for the first 30 miles or so. Then I started hearing the clanking noise coming from the driveshaft. After reading alot of posts on this subject from alot of ATV forums I have concluded that mine is driveshaft slop. At around 15-20 mph you let off the throttle and then reapply it it will clank. As some of the posts have mentioned and I tried. With 4 wheel engaged the slop is not as bad. Overall I love this machine. I have approximately 380 miles. No major problems. It will top out at 55mph. I can go approximately 85 miles before I have to switch to reserve. I have the XT package and now I'm glad I got it. Mine is yellow so the scratches don't show up as bad. But I have noticed the plastic is a softer material than my fathers Polaris. Last Sunday I was pushing/breaking ice up to 2" thick. The water holes were around 2' deep. At one point I didn't think I was going to make it. But the front tires got traction and away I went. Great machine..........

I have a brand new GMC 4x4 that makes all kinds of clanging and banging in the drive train and the motor knocks when you start it up in the morning, it only cost slightly over $30,000 and GM has all kinds of service bullitins saying this is all normal, I was thinking of switching from Polaris to a new Bombi Outlander but now I'm starting to wonder, I don't want to end up like my new truck that makes more noise than the one I got rid of with 200,000 miles on it, tell me some good things about the outlander or maybe I'll take up mountain bikes?

Okay the positive things about the Outlander 400. It has the best suspension I've ever riden on, handles corners going 40 like no big deal and that's on the stock tires. I'm going to the ITP ATR's soon and am anxious to see how it handles then. It has great power, not as much on the take off, but after your moving it moves well. Does super on the technical type of riding too. It's an awesome machine, but the noise from the driveshaft bothers me. (Oh yeah, supposed to keep this positive) We went on a 50 mile ride yesterday and I really didn't notice it much yesterday. I like this machine enough to buy the bigger engine Outlander when/if Bomb. comes out with it. Oh yeah........the seat is heavenly to sit on, really soft and comfy. Makes those long rides even better!!

The Outlander will handle GREAT with the ATRs. Both of mine have them on (see pics). Must tell you though, I ended up having to have all 4 rear ATRs replaced at least once due to defects. The shop that I was working with was great and did a nice job for me... but it took a good 2 months to get through it all. I would constantly be down on air even after the quads were just sitting on the trailer for a few days. Still loved them after I pumped them back up... but that's no way to go.. So, now that they are all holding air... I can sure say they were worth the investment.

11/24/03 UPDATE ---

I picked up my Outty from the dealer this past weekend and I believe that they have solved the noise problem. What seemed to be clutch noise was actually something else. They swapped out the clutches and the noise still remained at certain RPMs. They then removed the clutch and ran the engine and it still made a rattling noise. This ruled out the clutch system entirely.

Investigation reveals that it was the exhaust pipe rattling against a metal hanger bracket. On the Outty Max if you take off the right-front plastic cover you can see a metal bracket that is supposed to stabilize the exhaust pipe. Mine didn't have the heat resistant material around it to absorb the vibration and it was missing a spring that wraps around the pipe and bracket which allowed the pipe to vibrate against the bracket at certain RPMs. It was a simple fix that took longer to detect than to actually correct.

I suspect that some of you other Outty owners chasing down a 'suspected' clutch noise issue may want to pop off your plastic covers and look at your exhaust pipe hangers.
Good luck.

Sounds good about the hanger on your outlander, did the noise ever come back? I have one in my shop for a CV boot and the guy asked that I check this noise out. Sounds like what you guys were dealing with.

Default Rear end noise

One of the noises has been from the rear suspension and it is a simple fix under warranty. I've had mine fixed twice now for that noise. Just got it back this past Friday. The first fix lasted about 2 months. Time will tell on this time around. The other metal banging/clanging noise was first thought to be the driveline slack noise BUT in conversations with Fourlix it maybe the clutch instead???? We will be pursuing this possibility with our dealer as well as the Bomb rep. As I've told the rep, it is very upsetting/embarassing to hear this nice machine make such a terrible noise. Takes the riding enjoyment out of it.

I DO RECOMMEND that you file a complaint with Bombardier and get a case number. This will protect you in the future if you LOG YOUR quad problem with them. That came right from one of the Reps at Bombardier. We need to do more than complain to each other about our disatisfaction and the problems with these quads. If they get enough complaints from us I would HOPE that they do something about our problems. HERE IS the toll free number for Bombardier 800/882-2900. Good luck and keep us posted!!
I have had a noise from the rear end of my 2005 Outlander, 400 HO. changed Cv joints no help. It sounds like a dog is popping in and out or something. I think now it might be a over riding clutch. It does it when backing up and turning. I have had the noise for about 1500 miles. My manual does not show a cluster differential in the rear end only a pinion and ring gear. Am I describing the same type of noise? Have you got your problem fixed yet?
