Rejetting the DS myself....what jet/clip position to start with?
#1
i live in northern illinois, which i beleive is at like 600 feet above sea level (if anyone knows exactly feel free to correct me)
i originally had my local Yamaha shop rejet the bike (i installed MBRP FULL race pipe, KN filter and outerwear)
they installed the new needle and changed the jet one size... (i dont know if it was a size smaller or a size larger)
i have since LOST my extra jets so i cant figure out what size is in there now.... (anyone know what Stock main jet is?)
i have since dumped the MBRP tail pipe, and switched to a WB slip on (with the MBRP headers) since i have done this the bike seems to be running RICH.....its VERY VERY hard to start.... (i wore my battery almost all the way down so i had to pull start it...and unless i was EVERY SO CAREFUL at slowly giving it gas it would instantly die...) after like 20 minutes it finally warmed up more, but still has serious lag at low throttle, and the whole powerband seems to be crappy (crappy being it seems boggy and is slower than before....)
The grab bar and the discs also have a TON of black suit on them... so this is RICH correct? i was like 100% sure it was...but i was told elsewise by a freind......
if this is the case....what do i need to change...? what need clip postion and what jet should i start at(this is remembering main jet has been changed one size)? (i will be attempting to rejet the bike myself this next weekend and i thought i would go ahead and order jets now so im prepared)
thanks in advanced for the help!
(i know everyone the board is sick of jetting questions but i tried searching and its hard to tell some peoples locations and a few other variables were blurry...)

Sounds lean on the idle circuit. Are you running a clamp on? If not check the "help with tuning" thread and follow my instructions. It's worth a try.

Try this... Get a 50 pilot jet, 2 1/4 turns out on fuel screw, needle all the way down.... Then try the stock 165 main jet, and a 170 main and see what works better. I run a 50 pilot with the fuel screw about 2 1/4 turns out, dyno-jet needle all the way down, and a dyno-jet 165 main.... Runs PERFECT!! I'm close to your elevation too so it should work great for you too.

your bike didn't come with the pull starter maybe that was an option in Florida? I think he meant like towed behind a vehicle,
Roost check your valve clearance, too tight = very hard to start, but it could easily be a poorly adjusted carb too. Let us know

Does is shoot out black crap on start up or just from normal riding. Clean all the black stuff off before you try to start it cold next time. You using the choke or not??? Also, check to see what the plugs look like right after you get it started up.

i start it both using choke and w/out seems to be just as hard to start no matter which method i go with....
after the local shop rejetted my quad i did change the plugs (had gone to start it a few tanks after it was jetted and kept cranking with NO sign of it firing...) so i pulled the plugs out to find they are JET BLACK with plenty of black soot.....
ill have to check them again...im assuming tho they will be even worse.... (i do have two fresh plugs, but ill wait till after i rejet to install them)
roughrider, it seems to be from start up mainly, but it does gather more and more soot as i ride (i have only ridden for probably a total of 30-45 mins after i installed the WB, because it has been running so horribly)
(im dying to get it running well so i can actually enjoy riding again!)
and pushin the limit: do you have an email or AIM name you wouldnt mind posting or PM'ing to me? if you dont mind i coudl really use some 1 on 1 advice once i get ready to pull the carb apart to rejet by myself..... (last time i TRIED i had a ton of trouble fitting things back together so gave up and took it to the shop) but seeing as how it might take more than one try to get the bike running well im just going to attempt to do it myself
if you dont want to give me your info thats no prob at all tho.
i just need as much help as i can get for this!
also, the shop changed the jet one size.... like i said i had the KN and the new pipe...so they probably would have used a Larger jet i assume? (i have lost my extra jets and only have the stock jet, so i dont know if they went up or down....)
where can i purchase the 50 pilot jet? (should i order any other sizes of pilot/main jets in case its not close?)
thanks a bunch guys! (it started to snow about an inch here 2 days ago so im dying to get the DS done so i can slap the Realtor tires on and go roost some snow )
