First Gear?? Whats that??
Get some power in your ds and you too will forget what first gear is..
2nd is good 3rd is better if you have the power...
Gearing and clutch starting totally depends on where you want the power.. You want it down low get smaller sprocket and run a gear higher.
Some racers run 17th sprocets and only run 2nd or 3rd the entier race, they just have the power to turn taller sprockets up top. plus, they dont shift as much just all gas....

Who the heck said it dont wheely???!?!! ya hang on lay on the front and go like heck!!!
I found that when I dump it of the line I get wheel spin but it hooks up better once moving. It breaks them loose before it hooks up.. Now I would NOT do it on pavement! thats a death wish.. I have fallen off the back thats why I have a teather cord. BUT you stay forward and pay attention and your ok. Its fun riding a power wheely.

I am running the stock Ohstus and most of the time leaning forward it will spin for 20 or 30 feet then hook up and go. I live in the desert so most of my riding is in packed sand. I do have to be a little cautious when the sand is damp as it seems to hook up quicker. I haven't dumped the clutch without leaning forward though. Maybe I should sit a little further back to get her up.

rear shock setup is the key to launching !!! the ds can be setup to launch pretty hard without wheeling to bad . a perfect launch will carry the front wheels 3-6" off the ground the whole way out .
What do you recomend set rear shock stiff and strap down the front?

Drag racing is a little (rather, A LOT) different between areas. Around here if you strapped the front of you ATV down you'ed get killed just after the start of the race - there are generally about 3-4 big whoops at the very bottom of the hill making suspension important in drag 'round here.

this is very true, you guys that drag in the dunes would need that front suspension. where I do most of mine is on flat surfices where we can get away with straping the front.
